Eric Jurgens, dedicated and loved son, husband, father, grandfather, firefighter, and stranger to no one.
Eric lost his hard fought battle with cancer yesterday and entered the gates of Heaven.
I chose this picture from the day he graduated rookie school because his infectious smile exemplified his personality. He was the “old man” of that class but was determined to do everything those young people did, and did that and more. That’s what Eric was. Eric was a dedicated member of our department and was always ready to drop everything to answer the calls to help our community in their time of need. Eric’s impact on his fellow firefighters, friends, family, and community will never be forgotten.

"His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."

As I am at a loss for the words tonight, I simply want to share the words of our friend Tim Baker. Please keep Eric’s family and fire family in your prayers.

It is with profound sadness that we at the Waldens Creek Fire Department mourne the passing of our brother in service, Eric Wayne Jurgens, a dedicated firefighter with Wears Valley and Sevier County Fire Departments.

Eric left us today, July 16, 2025, but his legacy of selfless heroism will endure forever.
Eric was the epitome of a tireless firefighter—always the first to respond, no matter the hour or challenge. As a devoted husband and cherished friend, he had an unbreakable spirit, dropping everything to lend a hand to anyone in need within our community. His infectious smile lit up every room and every call, reminding us all of the joy in serving others.

To Eric’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters: our hearts ache alongside yours. We stand ready to support you in this time of grief, just as Eric would have done for us. Rest easy, brother. Your watch is over, but your light shines on.

With deepest sympathies,
Chief Baker

Think before you burn! 🔥

As we enjoy our beautiful forests in Tennessee, let's pledge to keep them safe from wildfires. Planning to burn debris? Follow these tips to do it safely:

🔥 Make sure to apply for a permit online before starting
🔥 Double-check for any local burn bans
🔥 Steer clear of burning on windy days
🔥 Clear a 5-foot barrier around your fire, removing all flammable stuff down to the dirt
🔥 Have some fire containment tools ready—like a rake, shovel, or water
🔥 Stick around until the fire is completely dead out. Don't walk away!

Let's work together to prevent wildfires and preserve the beauty of our Tennessee forests for generations to come. A little caution can go a long way in protecting our natural resources.

It is with great pride and anticipation for the future, that we announce today our merger with Sevier County Fire and Rescue. Since 1986, WVVFD has been an integral part of this community. I have witnessed enormous growth and change over these many years. We have grown from a single fire truck stationed at my grandpas garage, to a six bay station full of state of the art equipment. We’ve gone from calling a local number for emergencies that was routed thru Charlie McCarter’s store during the day and firefighters homes at night, to the 911 system we have today. We could not have become the fire department we are today without the amazing support of our community. From the old fundraising dinners at Wearwood school, the endless supply of food and drink during major fires, to the many monetary donations from community members and out of town property owners alike, it has truly been an amazing transformation. At a time when it’s so hard to get volunteers, and with our community’s growth, having paid personnel at our department in the near future is vital to our area. As a community, we should all be excited for what this means to all of us!
Fire Chief Tony Patty
I would also like to note that there will still be volunteers along with the paid personnel, as Sevier County Fire and Rescue is a combination department.
