Last evening, I spent a few hours mowing the grounds, grooming the property, and continuing the care of this special place. I always look forward to these moments. They provide a welcome opportunity to step away from the normal grind of daily life and spend a little time in the quiet company of history.

Historical Tidbit: Family cemeteries like this one were once common throughout South Jersey. Rather than burying loved ones in a public cemetery, many early families established their own burial grounds on the family homestead, creating sacred places that remained part of the landscape for generations. Today, these small family cemeteries stand as lasting reminders of the families who settled our communities and helped shape our local history.

It is an honor to continue caring for this remarkable place and helping preserve the stories of the Chew family for future generations.

Update – Friday, June 26, 2026: The Jesse Chew Family Cemetery continues to be cared for and watched over.

One of the greatest rewards of preserving this peaceful place is witnessing the next generation of wildlife making it part of their home. It was a joy to see this doe and her fawn quietly wandering through the cemetery, discovering the apples we had set out just the other day.

Places like this are more than historic burial grounds—they are also quiet sanctuaries where history and nature exist together. Moments like this are a gentle reminder that while we work to preserve the past, life continues all around us.

We brought corn, carrots, and a few other treats to the property this evening for the deer.

We started back home at 5:10, and by 5:20, one of our four-legged friends had already arrived to inspect the evening's delivery. Apparently, the dinner announcement travels fast through the woods.

Every now and then, something happens at the Jesse Chew Family Cemetery that reminds me why preserving these places matters so much.

A few days ago, my trail camera—which I keep on the property simply to monitor its condition and to keep an eye on vandals—captured something I did not expect. Two young women had stopped by the cemetery and, while looking around, noticed a large fallen limb and several broken branches inside the fenced area.

Instead of simply walking past, they took the time to move the limb and clear the debris away from the graves.

It may seem like a small act, but to someone who has been caring for this historic family cemetery for the past 14 years, it meant a great deal. In all that time, I have never witnessed a moment like this. The camera only captured a few snapshots, but they were enough to show a simple and thoughtful act of respect.

These old burial grounds represent real families, real lives, and an important piece of our local history. Seeing younger visitors show that kind of care and consideration was a wonderful and unexpected surprise.

To the two young women who took the time to do that—thank you. Your kindness did not go unnoticed.

Update – Sunday, February 8, 2026: The land all about us has been snow-covered, and the temperature has been frigid for 14 days. It has been difficult for many of us humans to get about and to cope with the winter weather. I can only imagine what the wildlife is doing to survive. I continue to bring food to the deer and other creatures at this special place. Today, it is sliced apples and a new feed block. The deer know to come here, as it is safe within its bounds.
