The property remains well cared for. After today's cutting, I replaced the old colored whiskers that marked the smaller, less visible stones with new green ones. The whiskers serve two purposes: they help when navigating the mower, avoiding damage to a stone, and they make it easier to track and inventory what has been recovered so far.

We are fortunate that this cemetery remains in the condition it does today. As one of the area's oldest burial grounds, it has survived remarkably well. Much of the preservation likely comes from the old stone wall surrounding the property. For generations, the wall helped keep livestock from wandering through and damaging or knocking over stones. It also provided some protection from the wind and weather that have taken their toll on so many other early cemeteries.

This afternoon, I returned here to continue caring for and mowing this historic burial ground. Every visit reminds me that this small cemetery is far more than a collection of old stones hidden away from view — it is a sacred piece of Mantua Township’s early history.

Resting here are members of the Driver family, one of the pioneering families of the Barnsboro area, whose roots in Gloucester County trace back to the early 1700s. These were farmers, settlers, church goers, and families connected to many of the names that helped shape South Jersey history — including the Chew, Heritage, Eastlack, Carpenter, and Eglington families.

The individuals buried here witnessed the transformation of this region from dense wilderness and scattered settlements into the communities we know today. They also lived through the unsettled and uncertain years surrounding the American Revolution, a time that forever changed both the nation and the lives of the families who called this area home.

As I worked among the stones today, I could not help but think about the people buried here — ordinary people whose hard work, faith, sacrifice, and perseverance helped build this community.

Places like the Driver Family Cemetery deserve to be remembered, cared for, and respected. The time spent preserving these grounds helps ensure that their stories are not lost to time.
