The Jennings County Sheriff's Office would like to thank Deputy Shawn Minton for taking the lead on the Anti-Litter campaign art contest in the Jennings County Elementary Schools.

Last week, Deputy Shawn Minton took Sheriff Kenny Freeman around the county and visited every elementary school to introduce the project or idea. The support was overwhelming from the senior staff at the schools. They all embraced the idea and said – “when can we start?” The community is really saddened by the amount of litter in our wonderful and beautiful county.

Sheriff Kenny Freeman states: “It was heart warming to see how much all of the schools support Deputy Minton. They said the kids love him and love the time spent with him throughout each day. I was so happy to hear that as the School Resource Officer - Shawn Minton is connecting with the kids and the teachers and all the while making a difference. I would like to share this one last funny item – one of the kids always ask “When is Officer Mittens coming?” It is just AWESOME to hear that he is so welcomed by our children in our school system.”

To the Good People of Jackson County,

My name is Gary Driver and I am the former Sheriff of Jennings County, serving from 2015-2018.

During my time as Sheriff, I had the honor and privilege to work with Deputy Shawn Minton, who is seeking election to be your Sheriff. I can say that Shawn is an excellent deputy who is up-front and honest in everything he does. Shawn is able to command respect while demonstrating that same level of respect toward others, regardless of the situation.

Police work requires a certain type of person - one who is knowledgeable about the many facets of law; one who is able to maintain professionalism and objectivity in each situation; one who can retain emotional composure when faced with split-second decisions. Equally important is the passion to serve others, even in the face of the disrespect that is sometimes shown to officers.

While some officers are becoming discouraged and looking at career changes, Deputy Minton is wanting to do more. He wants to “serve and protect” for the right reasons.

If you want your Sheriff to be an approachable and trustworthy leader, I hope you will get to know Shawn and see for yourself that he has the leadership qualities that the citizens of Jackson County deserve.
