Seymour Police Department to increase impaired driving enforcement ahead of Labor Day

Seymour, Indiana — As summer winds down, the Seymour Traffic Safety Partnership (Seymour Police Department, Jackson County Sherrif’s Department, and Crothersville Police Department) is partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) to increase patrols and conduct sobriety checkpoints as part of the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national enforcement campaign, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Through the Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program (CHIRP), an ICJI initiative that provides federal funding for local traffic safety enforcement, officers statewide will work overtime beginning August 19 through September 7, 2026, to identify and stop motorists under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

“Our officers are seeing the consequences of impaired driving far too often,” said Lieutenant Michael Cooper. “As we enter the final weeks of summer, we are asking every driver to make responsible decisions. A sober ride isn’t just the safest option—it’s the choice that saves lives.”

Preliminary data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) shows that in 2025, nearly 23% of Indiana’s traffic fatalities involved alcohol, and more than 41% involved drug impairment.

“Impaired driving continues to be one of the most serious threats on our roadways, and we’re focused on reducing these tragedies through education and enforcement,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. “This year’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign reminds everyone that impaired driving is preventable. When you choose a sober ride, you’re helping protect your community and ensuring everyone makes it home safely.”

In Indiana, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, although drivers can be arrested at any BAC level if an officer believes they are impaired.

Have a Plan Whether You're Driving, Riding, or Hosting:

Before drinking, plan a safe and sober ride home.
Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if they've been drinking.
If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home.
If you see an impaired driver, call 911. Always wear your seat belt — it’s your best defense against impaired drivers.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign, administered by ICJI, is supported with federal traffic safety funds provided by the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 108 was recently recognized by the National Fraternal Order of Police for our commitment to the community at the recent National Night Out held at Jamestown Apartments. Officers had the opportunity to talk with community members, connect with kids, and even let them explore some of the police vehicles. The Seymour Fire Department and other local organizations also joined in the evening. National Night Out is all about building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and events like this create an opportunity to connect in a relaxed, welcoming setting. The Seymour Police Department is currently searching for anyone who may be familiar with James Tipton Wyatt. James Tipton Wyatt is a 68-year-old white male, 330 pounds, and 5 foot 10 inches tall. On August 4, 2026, at approximately 11:55 AM, Seymour Narcotics Division and Detective Division assisted Jackson County Probation Officers with a probationary search in the 200 block of South Park St. in Seymour. During the probation search probation officers located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. A search warrant was then obtained for the location. During the ex*****on of the search warrant, additional methamphetamine and paraphernalia were located. All together over 400 grams of methamphetamine was located during the search. The approximate street value of the items located is over $3,000. As a result of the investigation, Thomas Murray (38) of Seymour was arrested for Dealing Methamphetamine (level 2 Felony), Possession of Methamphetamine (level 2 Felony), Possession of Paraphernalia (A Misdemeanor), and Maintaining a Common Nuisance (level 6 Felony).

All parties herein depicted or described are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Last night, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 108 participated in the Annual National Night Out at Jamestown Apartments of Seymour. FOP Lodge 108 served snow cones to the community at the event. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign. The campaign aims a building trust between law enforcement and residents through informal friendly gatherings. There were several officers at the event to speak with community members and the kids got to play around in some of the police vehicles. The Seymour Fire Department was also at the event as well as other organizations.

Yesterday Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 108 was honored to be part of the City of Seymour Parks and Recreation End of Summer Escape. The was one of the last summer events before the kids head back to school. Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 108 served over 300 hotdogs with chips, over 24 pounds of nachos with cheese, over 450 snow cones, and plenty of water at no cost to the community. This is our way of giving back. We are proud to be FOP and proud to be a part of the community we serve!

The Seymour Police Department is currently transitioning to our new dispatch center after an extensive remodel. Currently, there are some technical issues with the regular phone service coming into the police department whether it be to dispatch or to administration. If you need to call into the regular lines, just be patient with us while we work to solve the issues. 911 service is fully functional and working as it should. Just a reminder, please only use 911 if you have a real emergency. Thank you for being patient while we make this transition into the new dispatch center.

The End of Summer Escape is this Friday July 31, 2026. FOP Lodge 108 will be serving hot dogs, chips, snow cones, and nachos from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This is a free event to the public. Come out and join us!
