OR and W Fire District OR&W Fire Dist.(formally Shadyside Fire Dept.)is a combination department in Shadyside Ohio. We cover the Village of Shadyside and Mead Township. Chief Edward F.

I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a firefighter The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the firefighter has to do believe that his is a noble calling. There is an adage which says that, "Nothing can be destroyed except by fire." We strive to preserve from destruction the wealth of the world which is the product of the industry of men, necessary for the comfort of both the rich and the poor. We are defenders from fires of the art which has beautified the world, the product of the genius of men and the means of refinement of mankind. Croker FDNY circa 1910

Thank you for following along with our battery safety tips throughout Fire Prevention Week. Here is a quick recap of the key reminders to help keep your family and home safe:

🔋 Cheap Charger? Don't Chance It.
Always use manufacturer-approved chargers and charging cords.

🛋️ Soft Surface? Hard Pass.
Charge devices on a hard, non-combustible surface, not on beds, couches, or carpets.

🔥 Feels Hot? Stop Using It.
If a battery becomes unusually hot, stop using it immediately and move it to a safe location if possible.

🔌 Fully Charged? Time to Unplug.
Disconnect devices once they're fully charged and avoid leaving them plugged in unnecessarily.

🏡 Tools and Rides? Charge Outside.
When possible, charge e-bikes, scooters, power tools, and other larger lithium-ion batteries outdoors.

A few simple precautions can go a long way in preventing battery fires.

Stay safe, and thank you for helping make our community a safer place! 🚒🔥

Fire Prevention Week: Battery Safety Tip #5

As part of Fire Prevention Week, and because we have experienced several fires related to battery safety, we will be sharing a battery safety tip each day.

Tip #5: Soft Surface? Hard Pass.

Charging lithium-ion batteries on soft surfaces such as beds, couches, blankets, or carpets can be dangerous. Soft surfaces can trap heat around the battery and charger, increasing the risk of overheating. They are also often made of flammable materials that could ignite if a battery malfunctions.

When charging your devices, always place them on a hard, flat, non-combustible surface and keep them away from anything that can burn.

Fire Prevention Week: Battery Safety Tip #4

As part of Fire Prevention Week, and because we have experienced several fires related to battery safety, we will be sharing a battery safety tip each day.

Tip #4: Fully Charged? Time to Unplug.

Once your device is fully charged, it's time to unplug it. Leaving lithium-ion batteries connected to a charger for extended periods can increase wear on the battery and may increase the risk of failure.

Avoid charging devices overnight or leaving them plugged in when no one is home. Unplugging your device once it is fully charged is a simple step that can help reduce fire risks and extend battery life.

Fire Prevention Week: Battery Safety Tip #3

As part of Fire Prevention Week, and because we have experienced several fires related to battery safety, we will be sharing a battery safety tip each day.

Tip #3: Feels Hot? Stop Using It.

If your lithium-ion battery feels unusually hot while charging or in use, stop using it immediately. Excessive heat can be a warning sign that the battery is damaged or malfunctioning, which could increase the risk of fire.

If it is safe to do so, move the battery outdoors and away from combustible materials. Do not continue charging or using a battery that becomes excessively hot.

When in doubt, replace the battery and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for disposal.

Today, our members had the opportunity to visit Ms. Syd’s Preschool to provide some fire safety education to the students as part of Fire Prevention Week.

We enjoyed spending time with the kids while teaching them some important fire safety tips and helping them learn what to do in the event of a fire. Fire prevention and education are important parts of keeping our community safe! 🚒🔥

Thank you to Ms. Syd’s Preschool for having us!

Fire Prevention Week: Battery Safety Tip #2

As part of Fire Prevention Week, and because we have experienced several fires related to battery safety, we will be sharing a battery safety tip each day.

Tip #2: Cheap Chargers? Don't Chance It.

If you are charging your ride-on equipment, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, or other devices that use lithium batteries, using cheap or uncertified chargers and charging cords can increase the risk of battery failure and fire. To help keep your family and property safe, always use the charger and charging cord provided by the manufacturer or a manufacturer-approved replacement.

A low-cost charger may save money today, but it could cost much more if it causes a fire.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, and because we have experienced several fires related to battery safety, we will be sharing a battery safety tip each day.

Tip #1: Charge batteries outside whenever possible.

If you are charging your ride-on equipment, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, or other devices that use lithium batteries, charging them outdoors is the safest option. In the event of a battery failure during charging, keeping the battery outside can help prevent a fire from spreading to your home and reduce the risk of serious property damage.

Yesterday, a few of our members participated in the Belmont County Tanker Task Force training.

This training focused on water movement and the quick filling and unloading of tankers. Training alongside departments from across the county helps strengthen our relationships and ensures we can work together efficiently during an emergency.

Continued training and interoperability help us better serve the citizens of Belmont County.
