In 1825, a wealthy Welsh industrialist bought an entire American town to prove that socialism could work.
He had the money, the buildings, the theory… and hundreds of disciples ready to settle in.
Two years later, it was over.
Robert Owen paid about $150,000 for the town of Harmony, in Indiana.
He recovered about 8,000 hectares, more than 160 buildings, working mills, and already productive farms.
He renamed it New Harmony.
Nearly a thousand people arrived in the first year.
Owen was already successfully managing mills in New Lanark, Scotland.
He was famous for treating his workers well… while remaining profitable.
He believed that if private property were abolished and everyone were paid equally, cooperation would naturally replace competition.
In January 1826, William Maclure brought a barge filled with scientists, teachers, and geologists to New Harmony.
Historians call it the “Boatload of Knowledge.”
It was the most educated, best-funded, and best-equipped socialist community ever attempted on American soil.
If cooperation could beat the market anywhere… it was here.
She collapsed almost immediately.
The highest-performing workers were feeding, housing, and clothing neighbors who did nothing… all while receiving exactly the same thing in return.
So they stopped working too. Why bother?
Production plummeted, food shortages hit. Buildings fell into disrepair because no one owned them and no one was responsible for their upkeep.
Endless meetings replaced work.
Owen drafted seven different constitutions in two years to “fix” the system. None of them worked.
The American inventor Josiah Warren, one of the country's very first libertarian thinkers, was there on the scene.
He lived through the failure from the inside and later explained why.
His conclusion:
« Divergences of opinions, tastes, and objectives increased exactly in proportion to the demand for conformity. »
The more the community demanded unity, the more it fractured.
Warren had identified the fundamental problem nearly a century before Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek made it famous in economics.
When everyone owns everything, no one owns anything.
When work receives the same reward regardless of the effort, effort disappears.
When prices disappear, no one knows anymore what anything is worth.
Owen finally admitted his defeat in 1827.
In his farewell speech, he blamed the colonists themselves, asserting that they were "unprepared to be members of a community of common property and equality."
Translation: the system would have worked… if only the people had been different.
Every socialist regime since has trotted out a version of this excuse.
His own son, Robert Dale Owen, stated it clearly years later:
« All cooperative systems that offer equal remuneration to the skilled and industrious worker and to the ignorant and the lazy are doomed to collapse on their own. »
He had lived through the collapse. He knew.
All socialist experiments since New Harmony have ended the same way… and for the same reasons.
Prices communicate the value of things.
Property creates the responsibility to maintain them.
When you abolish both, production collapses because no one can calculate anymore what needs to be produced or repaired.
New Harmony was not an isolated case. In the 1820s, there were other Owenite communities, most of which collapsed in 1 to 3 years.
And in the 1840s, the Fourierist phalansteries met exactly the same fate !
