In celebration of our commemorative year as a utility, we'd like you to get to know the current people behind the scenes keeping your power on and your water flowing.

We're happy to introduce SPU team member, Jack Schintz.

Jack attended the Southeast Lineman Training Center in Georgia where he completed the Electrical Lineworker Program. Following school, he did contract work for a year and then joined SPU in 2021 as an Apprentice Lineworker. Jack put in the hours and honed his skills achieving Journey Lineworker in 2025.

He enjoys the challenges that each day brings and then working through those challenges to complete the task.

The best part of his job is the team environment and getting to serve Shakopee. In his words, “It’s public service! It’s great helping the community you live in.”

In celebration of our commemorative year as a utility we'd like you to get to know the current people behind the scenes keeping your power on and your water flowing. We're happy to introduce SPU team member, Kevin Menden.

Kevin has called Shakopee home except for the two years he lived in Colorado. He joined SPU in 2023 after working as a concrete construction laborer.

Kevin started as a Water Operator Apprentice and in 2026 he parlayed his water meter experience to our new AMI Data Analytics and Meter Services position.

He enjoys working with his hands and being outdoors, and using his analytical skills to troubleshoot and decipher data. Mostly, he loves working at SPU making a difference in the community he calls home.

Irrigation season is here! Before you set your sprinklers loose for the summer, take a few minutes to check for leaks, broken sprinkler heads, or stuck valves. What seems like a small drip or hidden leak can waste thousands of gallons of water — and lead to a surprisingly high-water bill.

A quick system check now can save water, prevent costly repairs, and help you avoid sticker shock on your utility bill later. After startup, keep an eye on your water usage. If it suddenly spikes, your irrigation system could be leaking or need adjustment.

We’re flushing the first high elevation area – east of Marschall Road to County Road 83, and from Valley View Road north to 17th Ave.

Why all the splashing around? This important maintenance helps keep hydrants working their best, improves water quality, and clears sediment and mineral build up. You may notice crews out and about or temporary discoloration in the water, but it’s all part of keeping your water system fresh and flowing smoothly.

Did you know backflow prevention helps keep our drinking water safe?

Backflow is when water flows the wrong way (backward in the plumbing system), potentially bringing contaminants into our clean water supply. That's why if you have an irrigation system, you are required to test your backflow device each year. Regular testing helps protect your home and your community. Submit a successful test ANNUALLY by your due date to be compliant and avoid a penalty.

In celebration of Drinking Water Week May 3-9, we give a BIG THANKS to our Water Department! Our crews work diligently flushing hydrants annually to keep water clean and flowing properly, and routinely maintain our tanks and towers to protect the quality of our drinking water. Staff is on-call 24/7 and every well house, pump house and booster station is visited 365 days a year to ensure proper functioning. Water is also tested daily.

We thank SPU Water Department for your dedication, hard work, and commitment to delivering safe, reliable, high-quality drinking water.

Yesterday was Skilled Trades Day — a time to recognize the hardworking people who keep our communities running, especially in the electrical and water industries. It’s also a great reminder to encourage those considering a career in the trades. MMUA offers a $1,000 scholarship program for individuals interested in pursuing careers in the utility sector.

The MMUA Utility Workforce Scholarship supports individuals interested in pursuing careers in the utility sector. Up to five $1000 scholarships will be awarded to students who enroll in a utility-related career program at an eligible institution. The scholarship is open to students seeking credenti...
