It's hard to believe, but it's that time of the year again. The Sunset Beach Police Department and Shallotte Police Department are gearing up for our annual toy drive. Officers will be at the Shallotte Walmart on November 13, 2021, from 10:00am - 2:00pm collecting new toys. Our partners from Brunswick Family Assistance will receive all the toys collected to help support local families. The Sunset Beach Police Department will also have bins in the lobby of Town Hall to collect new toys.

Have you gotten calls, text, emails or social media requests for payment in the form of gift cards?

Did they ask you to:

* pay an IRS department
* keep your Social Security benefits
* keep your utilities on (electricity, water, or heat)
* pay for tech support
* pay for a family member in trouble
* pay a member of the military needing money
* pay bail or ransom
* avoid arrest or deportation

If you answered yes, HANG UP!

This is a scam and you could lose money or personal data.

11/03/2021

Over the last several months our agency has taken many reports for stolen Catalytic Converters. We would like to share a post from our neighboring agency the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office. It has a lot of great information on how to protect your vehicle and what to do should you be a victim of a catalytic converter theft. We are always available for questions and concerns, just stop in or give us a call at 910-754-6008.

Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, along with many other areas, have seen an increase in the larceny of catalytic converters.

What is a catalytic converter?

Catalytic converters are located in the exhaust system of a vehicle between the engine and the muffler, and they are one of the last lines of defense against air pollution from vehicles. They use ceramic-coded beads and various precious metals (the catalysts) to convert pollutants like unburned gas and nitrogen oxide into harmless gases, according to cars.com. Thieves target catalytic converters because they contain precious metals, like platinum, palladium or rhodium, that are valuable to metal dealers.

How can I protect my vehicle's catalytic converter?

Detectives suggest several deterrents for protecting catalytic converters.

⏺ park in a garage if possible
⏺ park in a well-lit area
⏺ install a camera system at your home or business (make sure camera is operational, make sure the vehicle and surrounding areas are in view of the camera)
⏺ consider having your catalytic converter welded to the vehicle's frame (contact a professional)
⏺ consider a catalytic converter lock or "cat lock"
⏺ engrave the VIN or owner applied number (OAN) on the catalytic converter, or paint it a bright color (contact a professional)
⏺ register your catalytic converter

Catalytic Converters can be registered on the BCSO website at https://www.brunswicksheriff.com/resources/ccr.

If you have any information regarding catalytic converter theft, please contact the Sheriff's Office at 910-253-2777 or you can submit an anonymous tip through our website: https://www.brunswicksheriff.com/contact/submit-tip
