I'm the opossum in your garage, and I'd like to explain myself before anyone reaches for the phone.

I ducked in looking for somewhere cool, dark, and quiet to wait out the daylight. If I hissed, gaped my mouth, or drooled when you found me, don't take it as aggression. It's pure bluff. I'm the scared one here.

🐾 You may have heard opossums eat thousands of ticks. I'll be straight with you: that came from one old lab study, and newer work found we don't actually hunt them down. I'll nibble off the ones that land on me, but I'm no tick vacuum.

I rarely carry rabies because my body runs too cool for the virus to take hold. That part is real.

Leave a door cracked and I'll see myself out by dark 🐾

Those ridges winding across your lawn aren't what they look like. The animal making them has never eaten a blade of grass in her life.

She's an eastern mole, and she's a carnivore. Her entire diet is underground insects, grubs, and earthworms. She has no interest in roots, bulbs, or grass. The tunnels are hunting runs, pushed through soft soil following grub trails.

🌿 The brown patches that show up in late summer are usually grub damage, not mole damage. The grubs are chewing roots in the top few inches of soil. The mole is chewing the grubs.

She's nearly blind, finds prey by touch and vibration, and can dig about fifteen feet of tunnel in an hour.

Press the ridges back down with your foot. The grass bounces back in days.

The tunnels look like damage. They're a trail map of where she's already been 🐾
