Frequently Asked Questions About Tax Bills
1. I sold my property. Why am I still receiving the tax bill?
In the State of Maine, municipalities are legally required to bill the owner of record as of April 1 of each year. If you sold your property after April 1, 2026, you are still responsible for receiving the tax bill. Please forward the bill to the new owner.
IMPORTANT: Failure to forward the tax bill and ensure that the taxes are paid may result in a tax lien being placed on the property in YOUR name.
2. How can I pay my taxes if I work during Town Hall hours and don't trust the mail?
The Town of Shapleigh offers a secure tax payment drop box where you can leave a check at any time.
At Town Hall, we accept:
-Cash
-Check
-Credit or debit card
Please note that card payments are subject to a 2.5% processing fee charged by the credit card processing company. Unfortunately, the Town does not accept card payments over the phone due to auditing and issues with dispute charges.
3. My mailing address changed last year and I didn't receive my tax bill. What should I do?
Did you notify the Town of your address change?
The Town does not automatically receive address updates from the U.S. Postal Service. You must contact Town Hall by email whenever your mailing address changes. Keeping your mailing address current helps ensure that you receive important tax notices and other correspondence.
4. If I do not receive my tax bill, does that mean I don't owe taxes?
No. Not receiving a tax bill does not mean that taxes are not owed. The Town of Shapleigh is not legally required to mail tax bills; mailing them is a courtesy to taxpayers. Tax payers are responsible for knowing their tax obligation and ensuring that taxes are paid on time. Tax bills for 2026 are posted below for your viewing.
