The Equus Effect Program

The Equus Effect Program We teach veterans, first responders and ‘warriors from all walks of life’ how to wake UP and settle DOWN.

Through experiential learning with horses, body-based practices, insights into why we get stuck in habitual patterns and then, we help set you free! We also do one-on-one coaching, workshops and weekend retreats for men and women who want to rediscover their own "horse sense" and write new scripts for their futures.

Horses show us how we come across, without a word from us. Very cool.

A subtle shift in energy can change everything.

In this exercise, Lance responds not to force or big gestures, but to small changes in pace, focus, breath, and intensity. As the participant raises their energy, Lance moves forward. As it softens and settles, he comes to a quiet stop.

Most of us don’t realize how much we communicate through the energy we bring into a space. But others feel it, often before we say a word.

Good boy, Lance.

These images are from a visit to the Omaha Beach and Vietnam Memorials in Normandy, France and Washington, DC.

General Eisenhower told the troops before D-Day, that he knew the casualties would be great. They went anyway.

Everyone knew and they went anyway.

I read every single story that accompanied the photos of soldiers who survived to tell their tales. Men who crossed that unfathomably treacherous beach and climbed to safety, most of whom said that they were one of the few who survived.

The courage to face these unthinkable odds was and still is, unbelievably moving to me.

It was hard to leave the cemetery with crosses that mark the 9,389 lives that were lost in June, 1944.

We know many Vietnam vets at The Equus Effect and every single one knew others whose names are etched on the war memorial in DC.

The men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan lost battle buddies and will never forget those who could not remain on this planet after coming home.

It will take much more than a moment today for us to remember them all.

At the Horses & Healing Symposium this past week, we demonstrated our principles and practices to a group of 100 professionals in Experiential Learning with Horses.

We are grateful to our facilitators Tracie Shannon & Donnaldson Brown who handled two beautiful Rocky Mountain horses. The couple who volunteered to be participants had never worked with horses before. This was a true test of the impact of the body-based tools we use to settle folks down and teach them how to use finesse rather than force with these sensitive creatures.

Good day for us. Great day for them.

This weekend, we were thrilled to be at the Horses and Healing Symposium with !

We had a wonderful session showing other professionals in the field how we work with horses from the ground up, from the body up. A lot of the work is helping people notice where they might be stuck, based on what's happening in the body rather than in the feelings or the story. From there, we can start to move you out of that place, so you can feel a bit more grounded, more centered, and more understandable to the horses, who are always in their bodies.

Follow for more on somatic work and what horses can show us.

Last week, we hosted a wonderful retreat with .gilbert.3348 from in Sharon, CT. Each student did individual work with horses, using their bodies to stay present and in sync with the horses. In this video, Jackie and discuss the energetic give-and-take between humans and horses.

As from within, so without.

You can't give others a leg up in life unless your feet are firmly on the ground.

That means knowing your own triggers before they affect the room and recognizing your patterns before asking others to recognize theirs. It also means some real-time work, like learning to interrupt what's habitual, recover from what triggers/activates you, and come back to yourself so you can actually be present for someone else. Whether you are training to help others as a professional, walking the walk is one of our grounding principles at The Equus Effect.
