How to build your own Weather Preparedness Kit:
Have at least a three-day supply of food and water available
• 3-day supply of bottled water, one gallon per person per day
• Aseptically packaged milks (dairy or non-dairy)
• Cold, ready to eat cereal/granola
• Canned fruits and vegetables (preferably low-sodium)
• Canned beans (kidney, garbanzo, pinto, cannelini, etc.) (preferably low sodium)
• Canned hominy/posole (corn)
• Canned baked beans
• Canned brown bread
• Canned soups (no water needed) and stews (preferably low-sodium)
• Canned or aseptically packaged juices (preferably low-sodium vegetable juices)
• Ready-to-eat canned, dried, and/or hermetically sealed meats and fish
(tuna, salmon, sardines, smoked oysters; jerky; smoked salmon; summer sausage)
(Note: high-sodium foods will increase thirst)
• Nut butters, Nutella
• Jellies and jams
• Dried fruit, including raisins
• Packaged tubes of precooked polenta
• Crackers, rice cakes, hard flatbreads
• Hard taco shells/tortilla chips
• Nuts
• Hard candies
• Staples (salt, sugar, pepper, spices, herbs)
• High energy foods (sports bars, power bars)
• Vitamins and protein supplements
• Food for infants
• Special needs foods (elderly, gluten-free, low-cholesterol, low-sodium)
• Pet food
Will require availability of water and/or a means of cooking:
• Instant coffee, tea, cocoa, chai
• Powdered milk
• Evaporated milk
• Dry pasta, noodles, ramen
• Rice or rice mixes, preferably instant
• Bouillon cubes
• Dry soup mixes and soup cups, preferably with high nutrition (beans, pasta)
• Dry refried bean, falafel, and other bean-based mixes
• Hot breakfast cereals, polenta, couscous
• Dry international foods (Indian, Thai, etc.)
Non-food
• Non-electric can opener
• Battery-operated radio and extra batteries
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Toilet paper
• Moist towelettes
• Soap, liquid detergent
• Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (anti-microbial; not anti-bacterial)
• Feminine supplies
• Personal hygiene items (toothpaste, deodorant, mouthwash, skin cream)
• Plastic garbage bags, ties (small and large)
• Disinfectant
• Household chlorine bleach (not scented, color-safe, or with added cleansers; for use in disinfecting water, etc.)
• Aluminum foil
• Plastic storage containers
• Paper cups, plates, and plastic utensils
• Aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever
• Anti-diarrhea medication
• Antacid (for stomach upset)
• Laxative
• Anti-bacterial ointment
