Sharon Fire Department

Sharon Fire Department The Sharon Fire Department is a full-service, career fire department proudly serving the City of Sharon.

Our firefighters are dedicated to protecting life, property, and the community through emergency response, prevention, education, and professionalism. The mission of the Sharon Fire Department is to protect life, property, and the environment through the delivery of prompt and skillful fire suppression and rescue services, hazardous materials mitigation, and disaster management; and to provide a s

afe environment for citizens and visitors through public education, fire prevention programs, and fire code enforcement. Nestled within the westernmost portion of Mercer County, Sharon is equidistant between the cities of Erie and Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and Cleveland in bordering Ohio. Once a thriving primary metals town, Sharon is in long-term economic duress (28 consecutive years-to-date) resulting in a flux among residents. This continuing loss of a once iron-clan industrial base has resulted in abandoned and neglected buildings that, coupled with an aging and deteriorating stock of housing, pose unique challenges to the City’s firefighters. The again thriving downtown section is cradled between two steep hills, one that is a city block from the Ohio border and the other that serves as a steppingstone to the eastern sector of town. As a former “mill town,” the City is densely populated with street after street of row-type housing radiating in every direction towards neighboring towns. Today, the City’s 3.7 square miles embrace nearly 600 commercial buildings and 7,388 housing units. At least 50% of the homes were built before 1939 with at least 41% of the families in these homes having moved into the homes since 1995. This synopsis presents evidence of why the Sharon Fire Department responds to an average of 74 structure fires per year.

🚒 Congratulations on Your Retirement, Captain Brian Scarmack! 🚒

Today, the Sharon Fire Department recognizes Captain Brian Scarmack as he retires after more than 30 years of service to the City of Sharon and the members of this department. Captain Scarmack’s retirement became effective on May 5, 2026, closing the chapter on a long and impactful career that began on September 21, 1995.

The fire service has long been a part of Brian’s life. As the son of retired Sharon Fire Chief Art Scarmack, he grew up around this profession and carried on a proud family tradition of service to the Sharon community.

Throughout his career, Brian was known for his strong leadership presence and his ability to rally people around the things he cared about. He was intelligent, outspoken, and carried a level of confidence that naturally drew attention when he spoke. Whether in the station or around the kitchen table, Brian had a way of generating conversation and getting people invested in the discussion.

Brian was also exceptionally well-liked throughout the department. Whether operating on an emergency scene or spending time around the station, he built strong relationships with those around him and was someone people genuinely enjoyed working alongside. He also had a unique sense of humor and a dry wit that became a memorable part of everyday life around the firehouse.

Where Brian truly excelled was in his interaction with the public. He had an outstanding ability to connect with people — especially children — during station tours, public outreach events, and community interactions. His communication skills, sense of humor, and approachable personality made him a tremendous ambassador for the Sharon Fire Department.

Around the station, Brian will also be remembered for the meals he prepared for his crew over the years. He took tremendous pride in cooking, and many members would tell you he made some of the best meals ever served at the firehouse — just as long as nobody tried to sneak cheese into the recipe.

Above all else, Brian was a devoted family man whose love for his family was evident in everything he did.

Please join us in thanking Captain Brian Scarmack for more than three decades of service and wishing him health, happiness, and fulfillment in retirement.

👏 Congratulations, Captain Scarmack — thank you for 30 years of service. Enjoy your well-earned retirement.

🚒 Sharon Firefighters Attend FDIC International in Indianapolis 🚒

Last week, seven members of the Sharon Fire Department traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC International)—one of the largest and most respected fire service conferences in the world.

With nearly 40,000 firefighters from across the globe in attendance, FDIC brings together some of the most experienced and forward-thinking instructors in the fire service. Over the course of three days, our members participated in a wide range of classroom sessions, seminars, and professional development opportunities, covering topics such as modern fire behavior, leadership, training methodologies, and emerging challenges facing today’s fire service.

In addition to the educational component, our members also spent time at the FDIC Expo, where hundreds of vendors showcase the latest tools, equipment, and innovations designed to improve firefighter safety and effectiveness on the fireground.

Opportunities like this allow our personnel to bring back new ideas, techniques, and perspectives that directly benefit the Sharon community. Investing in training and professional development is essential to maintaining a high level of service and staying ahead of the evolving demands of the job.

We are proud of our members for taking part in this experience and for their continued commitment to learning and improving.

🚒 2025 Awards Banquet Spotlight: Distinguished Service Medal 🚒

As we continue highlighting honorees from our 2025 Awards Banquet, we recognize two members who were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal—an honor that reflects sustained exemplary performance and a long-standing dedication to service over the course of a career.

This year, we had the unique privilege of presenting this award to two recently retired members of our department: Captain Matt Grove and Captain Kevin McMahon.

Both individuals concluded distinguished careers earlier this year, and while their retirements were recognized at that time, this moment provided an opportunity to formally honor the full scope of their service in front of their peers, families, and the community.

The Distinguished Service Medal represents more than years on the job—it recognizes the consistency, professionalism, and commitment demonstrated over the course of a career. It is a reflection of the impact a member has on their department, their fellow firefighters, and the community they serve.

Captain Grove and Captain McMahon each leave behind a legacy defined by dedication to the job and to the people around them. Their contributions have helped shape the Sharon Fire Department into what it is today.

Congratulations to both recipients—and thank you for your years of service.

🚒 2025 Awards Banquet Spotlight: Unit Citation – Edgewood Road Incident 🚒

As we continue highlighting honorees from our 2025 Awards Banquet, we recognize the members of the Sharon Fire Department who were awarded a Unit Citation for their actions at a motor vehicle accident with entrapment on January 23, 2025.

On that evening, crews responded to 639 Edgewood Road for a vehicle that had struck a residential structure, leaving a patient trapped inside with the dashboard pinned down onto her legs. Operating in frigid conditions and following a prior structure fire, firefighters were faced with a complex and physically demanding extrication.

Under the direction of Captain Kevin McMahon and Lieutenant Nick Yurkovich, crews quickly stabilized the vehicle and initiated coordinated rescue operations. Using hydraulic rescue tools, they were able to lift and displace the dashboard while maintaining patient care and spinal stabilization.

Through teamwork, communication, and precision, the patient was successfully freed and transferred to EMS for transport to a trauma center.

A Unit Citation recognizes exceptional teamwork, coordination, and effectiveness during a significant emergency incident—and this response exemplified all three. The actions taken that night reflect a high level of training, professionalism, and commitment to the mission.

The following members were recognized for their actions:
• Captain Kevin McMahon
• Lieutenant Nick Yurkovich
• Firefighter Noah Amrhein
• Firefighter Brian Friesen
• Firefighter Tim Fuller

Congratulations to these members—and thank you for representing the Sharon Fire Department with professionalism and teamwork.

🚒 Meritorious Conduct Medal: Lieutenant Nicholas Yurkovich 🚒

Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Nicholas Yurkovich, who was awarded the Meritorious Conduct Medal in recognition of his actions on February 15, 2025.

While returning from a previous incident, Lieutenant Yurkovich and the crew of Rescue 83 were flagged down by a bystander for an individual who had fallen and struck his head. Recognizing the potential seriousness of the situation, Lieutenant Yurkovich ensured the patient received appropriate care and remained with him until EMS arrived.

What set this incident apart, however, was what happened next.

After the patient was transported, Lieutenant Yurkovich took the time to return the individual’s groceries to his apartment—going so far as to put perishable items away in the refrigerator and freezer. This thoughtful act ensured the individual could return home safely and with dignity, reflecting a level of compassion and professionalism that extends beyond the expectations of the job.

In the days that followed, the patient expressed his appreciation for the care and attention he received—highlighting the lasting impact of Lieutenant Yurkovich’s actions.

This award recognizes not just what we do on calls, but how we serve our community as a whole. Lieutenant Yurkovich’s actions are a strong example of that commitment.

Congratulations, Lieutenant Yurkovich—and thank you for your dedication to the Sharon Fire Department and the citizens of Sharon.
