Happy Buzzard Day! In light of this special day, this week’s “Feathered Find” is the highly social and compact Black Vulture (also known as a Buzzard). When seen in flight, look for white wingtips and an overall black body and head, rather than the red head and extensive white on the wings of the larger Turkey Vulture. While Turkey Vultures outnumber Black Vultures in the US, Black Vultures have a much wider range and are the most numerous vulture species in the Western Hemisphere.

What do we do when the trails are icy or frozen, and what does that have to do with leaves in the fall? Check out Keith's explanation in the video!

In keeping with the Holiday spirit, this week we are highlighting the Christmas Fern, one of Georgia’s native evergreen ferns. Evergreen plants, including the Christmas Fern, stay alive during the winter and stick out like a sore thumb on an otherwise brown forest floor. For the rest of the year, you can look at the individual leaflets and keep an eye out for the stocking-shaped leaves, similar in shape to those you hang on the mantlepiece! This fern can be found at almost all of our parks, and its presence usually indicates an area that water flows across, making it a wetland indicator plant!

As soon as fall is in the air, the song of this week's “Feathered Find” isn't far behind. The White-throated Sparrow can be heard singing “oh-sweet-Canada” all winter long across most of North America, where it’s a well-known and loved visitor to yards and feeders. This beautifully patterned songbird can be found on the ground and in brush piles across all of our parks and is often seen in large flocks.

Planning on riding at the park? Check out the trail conditions before you make the trip! Visit https://mtbatlanta.com/trail-status/ to check trail status. Remember, don't ride wet trails and let them dry for 24 hours before trying again.

Also, let us know about trees on the trail by messaging us on Facebook or email us [email protected]. Sharing a map point and a picture really helps us respond to tree issues.
