Sturgeon Update:

We have been seeing the sturgeon beginning to arrive at Sturgeon Park. We know each year, this amazing event draws large crowds to the area. Please note that we still have high water levels at the sidewalk. For everyone's safety, we ask that visitors continue to avoid going around the barricades and instead view the sturgeon spawn from the top of the hill near the parking lot or from the Mountain Bay Trail bridge. When the water recedes enough for us to feel safe removing the barricades, we will certainly do so.

For those of you who want to enjoy the sturgeon from your home, office, or classroom, the camera feeds are up as well and can be viewed by visiting our website: https://www.cityofshawano.com/412/Sturgeon-Cam

Please note that if you do see groups of individuals that are handling the sturgeon, they are most likely with the Wisconsin DNR, and they are taking measurements and gathering information about the sturgeon. That being said, if you see anything that seems out of sorts in the area, please be sure to report it.

**BALSAM ROW RD DAM UPDATE**

Crews have been hard at work building up 3–4-foot sand berms on both sides of the dam. While we are unable to stop the rising water levels, these efforts are designed to protect the embankments and direct overflow across the concrete portion of the dam. The water is still rising, but the rate has significantly slowed compared to just a few hours ago.

Dam operators remain on site and are closely monitoring conditions. Emergency coordinators will be notified immediately if there are any signs of structural concerns or potential failure.

At this time, evacuations are NOT necessary. However, we strongly encourage residents to have a plan in place should conditions change.

We are working closely with local partner agencies and have shelter plans ready if needed. At this point, we are confident in the mitigation efforts completed so far.

We will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve. Please stay alert and follow official channels for the latest information.

Public Notice: Balsam Row Rd Dam

We have been notified that the Balsam Row Rd Dam, just north of Shawano, is at risk of failure. Water has crested over the top of the dam, and because the dam is not fully functional, there are limited options to reduce the threat at this time.

If you live along the river south of the dam, please have a plan in place and be prepared to leave quickly if conditions worsen.

At this time, no official evacuation order has been issued. However, residents in the affected area should closely monitor the situation and be ready to act if further emergency notifications are issued.

Text 54166 to 888777 to receive further alerts. We will do our best to keep everyone aware of this ongoing situation via text alerts and Facebook.

ATTENTION -

We have been monitoring the rising water levels and, for the safety of the public, have closed the following parks/trails.

- Judd Park

- The Community Gardens (Lieg Park)

- The trails at Kuckuk Park (the playground, shelter, and courts are still open!)

- The trails at Sturgeon Park (the upper area, gazebo, and bridge are still open!)

We will continue monitoring the water and post again once they're safe to reopen.

Be careful out there and stay safe!
