People Over Politics Means Fighting for Recovery

The announced closing of Gateway to Recovery on September 30 is a devastating loss for our community. For more than 40 years, Gateway has helped people overcome addiction, rebuild their lives, and give families hope.

We cannot afford to lose treatment services in Oklahoma—especially in our rural communities. When treatment disappears, people don’t stop struggling with addiction. They simply have fewer places to turn, and the consequences are felt by families, employers, schools, law enforcement, and our entire community.

As a candidate for State Senate, I believe Oklahoma has a responsibility to make sure people can access quality addiction treatment when they need it, no matter where they live.

This is about people, not politics. Oklahoma needs to make treatment accessible, protect the services our communities depend on, and make sure no one is left without a path to recovery.

Standing Up for Recovery Services

The announced closing of Gateway to Recovery on September 30 is a significant loss for our community. For more than 40 years, Gateway has provided critical drug and alcohol recovery services to people and families who needed a path toward a better life.

When a trusted treatment provider closes its doors, access to treatment becomes harder—especially in rural communities where resources are already limited. That means more people may go without the help they need, and problems that could have been addressed through treatment can become even more difficult for families and our communities.

Oklahoma must do more to ensure quality treatment services are available to everyone who needs them, regardless of where they live. Recovery should not depend on your ZIP code.

For more than 40 years, Gateway has been able to live out its mission of serving and helping individuals and families who are facing mental health and substance use issues. That work has only been possible because of the dedication of our staff and the unwavering support of our communities, partners, donors and generous people like you.

Over the past 18 months, Gateway has faced contract cuts, reductions, and financial challenges at the state and federal level, and continuing this work has become incredibly challenging. We have done everything we can to overcome these challenges and continue providing services. Our incredible staff has worked tirelessly to ensure our patients receive the care and services they needed as best as possible.

It is with deep sadness that we announce Gateway to Prevention & Recovery, Inc. will close its doors after 42 years of service. Wednesday, September 30th will be our final day of service.

We are grateful to the people and communities who helped start Gateway and have continued to support, love and walk alongside us throughout the years.

While Gateway’s chapter is coming to a close, the need for compassionate and accessible mental health and substance use care remains. We ask our community to continue showing up for friends, neighbors, family members and others who may be struggling. We must continue to create safe, welcoming, and nonjudgemental spaces and encourage people to seek help when needed. We are still all in this together!

Thank you for allowing Gateway to be part of your lives and communities. We will forever be grateful for your trust and support.

After knocking doors in McLoud, I headed to Oklahoma City for the Oklahoma Federation of Democratic Women’s Women’s Equality Day celebration.

I’m grateful for the invitation and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon sharing lunch, hearing inspiring speakers discuss the work advancing women’s equality, and learning about Democratic candidates running to serve communities across the state.

I appreciated the warm welcome and the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful event.

The Celebrate Educators event was great as always. The Firelake Arena was packed with Educators from all over Pottawatomie County. Thank you to the CPN the Avedis Foundation for putting this really nice event each year to honor all of the educators that work so hard. It was great to see some many of my educator friends from a number of districts around the county. I especially like seeing former students from districts where I had photography contracts now working as teachers. Damon West had a really interesting message to share with the attendees.

It was a fun evening talking to OBU Students about registering to vote at Spotlight on Shawnee. We had some great conversations. They were amazing young people with great enthusiasm for their field of study. All ready to go out in the world and do amazing things.
