The Johnson County Park Police Department will be joining law enforcement agencies from across Kansas this Wednesday for the Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Special Olympics Kansas.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in Wichita, Kansas in the 1980s as a way to help raise money for a dinner for Special Olympics athletes participating in the State Games. Since then, it has grown into a long-standing tradition supporting athletes across the state.

Our team is proud to participate in this event and help carry the torch in support of these amazing athletes. If you would like to support our department’s team and this great cause, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for supporting Special Olympics Kansas and the athletes who inspire us all.

Our department is excited to join this incredible worldwide movement! The Law Enforcement Torch Run mission is very important to us and we are proud to help make a difference for those with intellectual disabilities. Please support our team by giving to our page. Today, the Johnson County Park Police Department, along with law enforcement agencies across the nation, honors the police officers who have fallen in the line of duty while serving the communities they loved.

The year 2025 was a difficult one for Kansas law enforcement, as our state lost four officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage, dedication, and service will never be forgotten. We are forever grateful for their bravery and the commitment they showed to protecting others.

Please join us in remembering these heroes, their families, their friends, and the agencies they served.

Over the past six years, Sergeant Gillespie has been assisting the Shawnee Mission School District’s Blue Eagle Program. This year, the Johnson County Park Police Department was proud to host one of the students at our department for a Blue Eagle internship.

During the internship, the student participated in ride-alongs, shadowed officers in specialty positions, and worked side-by-side with Sergeant Gillespie while learning about the law enforcement profession.

We would like to thank the Blue Eagle Program and Sergeant Gillespie for their continued hard work and dedication to helping mold the future generation of police officers.

The other day we had a great visit from a local 7th grader who needed a little help with a school project. Our officers were able to answer a lot of great questions and show off some of our equipment. They came prepared with some thoughtful questions, and we really enjoyed the visit. We hope the project goes well!

The Johnson County Park Police Department has been highlighting the different duties officers can take on within the department. Today, we’re spotlighting Boat Patrol.

In 2025, the department purchased a new patrol boat that is primarily used at Shawnee Mission Park Lake. All patrol officers are trained to operate the boat, as well as use essential water rescue equipment such as rescue discs and throw ropes to assist stranded boaters or individuals who have fallen into the water.

In addition to rescue operations, the boat is used for routine enforcement patrols on the lake and to respond to emergencies where water access is the most effective route.

Last week, the Johnson County Park Police Department was invited to play disc golf with the JCPRD 50+ Department. We met at the Art 9 course in Shawnee Mission Park and played all nine holes.

The event was a great opportunity to meet new people, enjoy the unique artwork throughout the course, and spend time outdoors. Officer Rench-Vopat and Officer Brock even managed to throw a few impressive discs. Captain Ward also attended, although he spent most of his time in the creek retrieving discs that had landed in the water.

Thank you to the JCPRD 50+ Department for the invitation—we had a great time and look forward to doing it again in the future.
