On Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at approximately 4:00 AM, while work a state sponsored traffic enforcement initiative, the Lake Quivira Police Department stopped a vehicle in the 8100 block of Holliday Drive traveling nearly 40 miles an hour over the posted 30 MPH speed limit. The driver stated he was late for work.

The Lake Quivira Police Department would like to remind the motoring public that a few extra minutes is never worth risking a life.

Please remember to slow down, stay alert, and drive with care. Speeding, distracted driving, and aggressive driving can have life-changing consequences not just for you, but for everyone sharing the road.

Sober driving campaign focuses on consequences of driving impaired

Labor Day weekend is often a time many celebrate. The Lake Quivira Police Department reminds the public to celebrate responsibly and drive sober.

The Lake Quivira Police Department joins law enforcement across the country to remind drivers to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. You can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the nationwide safety campaign, which runs from Aug. 29- Sept. 7.

Drunk driving is illegal and deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even a small amount of alcohol can affect one’s ability to drive. Drivers need to be responsible. If you drink and drive, you could get arrested or worse be involved in a traffic crash involving injury or death. It’s not cheap either. A first-time offense can cost the driver upwards of $10,000 in fines and legal fees.

Drivers should plan ahead this Labor Day weekend:

If you intend to drink, don’t drive.
Designate a sober driver
Call a rideshare or taxi

If your friend is going to drive, take away the keys and provide a sober way home.
If anyone spots a drunk driver, call local law enforcement.

Tonight, I had the privilege to meet an amazing mom, Jennifer Card, and three outstanding teenage softball players from the Oklahoma Athletics National 2010 Madden softball team.

Jennifer was driving back to their hotel from the Mid-America Sport Complex when the severe weather hit. Jennifer searched for the closest gas station and Google directed her to Lake Quivira. Jennifer stopped at the Gate and asked if they could take shelter. I was driving into the back lot at the same time.

I brought Jennifer and girls into the station and we waited out the severe weather together. Let me tell you, these girls had so much natural rizz and confidence that it made for great conversations.

Before leaving, the girls asked for a badge and a photo. Pictured left to right is Ella Walker #14, Kinley Standridge #13, and Madelyn Card #0.

Thank you, Jennifer, Ella, Kinley, and Madelyn for bringing so much joy and energy to my evening. It was great meeting all of you. Good luck tomorrow and safe travels back to Oklahoma!

Tonight, around 10:30 pm, a resident reported a large tree had fallen on to Lakeshore Drive South just east of the Terrace Trail South intersection. A majority of the tree was removed from the roadway. However, a small portion of the eastbound lane on Lakeshore Drive South is still blocked by the tree. Cones have been placed around the tree and Q-Inc. has been notified. The remainder of tree will be removed in the morning.

Click It or Ticket safety campaign stresses consequences of not wearing a seat belt

The Lake Quivira Police Department joined law enforcement across the country during the Click It or Ticket safety campaign. From May 17- May 30th, officers increased presence on local roads educating about the importance of buckling up and avoiding dangerous consequences.

The Lake Quivira Police Department recorded the following statistics during the campaign:
· Total number of vehicles stopped – 40
· Total number of contacts – 42
· Total tickets issued - 41
· Total warnings issued – 19
· Alcohol-related arrests, to include DUI Arrests - 3

These additional patrols were funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation as part of a grant. These added patrols did not impact routine patrol operations.
