As much as it pains us all to admit it, every day / night in The City of Sheboygan, homeless citizens face unexpected hostility along their journey.
A lot of what will be described herein can be observed & verified when it is convenient for you, the observers, during the late and early hours of any given date.
Often times it will be the late night or early morning walks / bike rides from spot to spot the homeless citizens of Sheboygan must take to keep warm enough to survive a night in the cold, lest hypothermia set in; wherein this hostility is experienced.
Often times along said walks or bike rides you will have few cars or people on the street. 3 out of the 5 cars you will see in passing at these late/early hours are going to have someone within, screaming something hostile out of their window in passing the homeless citizen/s. Some go as far as to blare nuisance music and bass while following the homeless for miles on end, others will go as far as nuisance behavior such as following the homeless while honking, repeatedly, parking wherever they are and performing either of the above, or all three.
There is a lesser spoke upon stigma affiliated with the homeless community locally, wherein, it is a common stereotype to see a homeless person walking at 2 in the morning and naturally assume they must be on drugs or alcohol, a non contributing vagrant, or a trouble maker.
Rather than to think about the conditions in which they are walking currently. Often times ill equipped for the weather or blustery conditions. The homeless must continue to move or it is very possible and though not often touched on in today’s media, very possible that they may not make it through the night as the temperature drops and the cold winter wind picks up off the lake.
This stigma, and the resulting unexpected hostility, can often be seen around the downtown area, and the waterfront/ beachfront area. Even in & around our own military bases locally.
Let’s break the cycle of this negative stigma attached to this false stereotype.
The truth is, there was as of 2021, five hundred homeless citizens in Sheboygan Wisconsin. With maybe 2-3% overall of those homeless citizens being afflicted by drug addictions or alcoholism. Thus it is an inaccurate and negative stereotype that only hurts and hinders our community as a whole. Often times a homeless individual whom has sought the appropriate resources and aid will be out and about late night and early morning due to the strict stipulations of some of the assistance programs and stable living transition programs such as the Salvation Army emergency lodge. There are many reasons to see the homeless community moving from point A to point B throughout a day, any one of the given reasons could be valid. However, it is mathematically less likely to be drug or alcohol related, than one of the given examples.
Let’s rethink how we view the homeless, together, as a city. 🌆
