Mass Casualty Incident Drill
On Tuesday August 25, Orange Cross Ambulance joined Cedar Grove Fire Department and First Responders, Sheboygan Fire Department, Random Lake Fire Department, Oostburg Fire & First Responders, Sheboygan County Emergency Management, City of Sheboygan Falls Fire Department and First Responders, Aurora EMS, Sheboygan County Hazmat, Belgium Fire and many others for a large-scale Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) training exercise in Cedar Grove.
The scenario involved a school bus and two passenger vehicles, including one vehicle carrying unmarked sulfuric acid that was actively venting from the trunk. Sixteen simulated patients presented with a combination of respiratory complaints, chemical burns, and traumatic injuries. The exercise also challenged responders when a firefighter became a simulated patient following chemical exposure.
Crews worked through triage, hazardous materials considerations, gross decontamination, treatment, and transportation. The scenario included two simulated fatalities, with the remaining patients categorized as red, yellow, or green based on injury severity.
Orange Cross Ambulance provided four ambulances, Sheboygan Fire Department provided two, and Random Lake provided one. Following decontamination and treatment, Orange Cross transported four simulated patients to HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, while Sheboygan Fire Department transported patients to Aurora Medical Center.
Exercises like this give local fire, EMS, first responder, and hospital teams the opportunity to practice working together before a real large-scale emergency occurs.
