Our afternoon shift responded to two separate injury crashes involving juveniles on illegal e-bikes and e-motos today. We're continuing to educate the community and enforcing violations. The Sheboygan Police Department customer service window will be closed from 1:00pm to 2:30pm on Thursday, August 27, 2026 due to a staff meeting.

The closure of the customer service window will not affect the normal day-to-day law enforcement operations.

8th Street Rotary Closure - Wednesday, August 26, 2026

Starting at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26th, the City of Sheboygan Department of Public Works (DPW) will be performing pavement marking updates at the 8th Street Rotary. Work will include repainting crosswalks, directional arrows, and centerlines.
During the project, the following traffic closures and detours will be in place:
• Indiana Avenue: Closed at South 9th Street. Traffic will be directed south on South 9th Street.
• South 8th Street at Kentucky Avenue: Closed, with traffic directed west on Kentucky Avenue.
• South 8th Street at Riverfront Drive: Closed, with traffic directed east on Riverfront Drive.
• A temporary two-way traffic lane will be established on South 8th Street between Indiana Avenue and South Pier Drive.

The project is anticipated to be completed and traffic control removed by 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026. All work and traffic impacts are weather-dependent and subject to change.

The City of Sheboygan appreciates the public's patience and cooperation during this project. For everyone's safety, especially the safety of workers in the area, please slow down and use caution when traveling through all work zones.

UPDATE:

On 8/23/2026, shortly before this incident, officers were in the area of S. 8th Street and Indiana Avenue to monitor traffic in response to neighbors that had previously made complaints of disorderly vehicles. Officers witnessed the suspect vehicle revving its engine causing backfires and excessive noise. When officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the operator fled.

The 19-year-old operator of the vehicle that fled from this traffic stop and later crashed was referred to the Sheboygan County District Attorney’s Office for the following Felony violations:

-Fleeing/Eluding Police
-2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety

He was also issued municipal traffic and ordinance tickets for the following offenses:
-Tire Squealing/Unnecessary Engine Acceleration
-Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
-Violating a red traffic light x 3
-Improper right turn
-Unsafe lane deviation
-Non-registration of a vehicle
-Reckless driving
-Operating with a suspended license

Including the citations that the suspect received for this incident, he has received a total of 33 traffic related citations from the Sheboygan Police Department over the past 13 months.

Reckless driving, like that displayed by the suspect in this case, poses a safety risk to all members of our community. Loud exhaust systems and unnecessary engine acceleration contribute to perceptions of decreased safety on our roadways and contribute to disorder in neighborhoods. The Sheboygan Police Department takes these violations seriously and will strictly enforce these behaviors when we witness them or they are reported to us.

On 8/23/2026, at approximately 5:40pm, Sheboygan Police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle, due to excessive engine noise and other driving behaviors, near the intersection of S. 8th Street and Indiana Ave. The offending vehicle failed to stop for officers and accelerated to a high rate of speed, traveling north on S. 14th Street from Indiana Ave. Officers pursued the vehicle for several blocks but ended the pursuit due to the offender's dangerous driving behaviors and speeds, near the intersection of N. 14th Street and Pennsylvania Ave. The suspect vehicle continued northbound on N. 14th Street.

Moments later, an officer responding to the area found the suspect vehicle as it approached the intersection of N. 14th Street and Superior Ave. That officer did not pursue the vehicle. The suspect vehicle proceeded into the intersection at a high speed, violating a red traffic light, and struck a vehicle that was eastbound on Superior Ave.

The suspect, a 19-year-old male from Sheboygan, was arrested on scene. There were no other occupants in that vehicle. He was transported via Sheboygan Fire Department ambulance to an area hospital, evaluated, and then jailed at the Sheboygan County Detention Center on multiple charges. He had no apparent injuries

The operator of the other involved vehicle, a 73-year-old Sheboygan man, was transported via Sheboygan Fire Department ambulance to an area hospital, with minor injuries. There were no other occupants in his vehicle.

The intersection of N 14th Street and Superior Ave closed for a short period of time but has now reopened.

The Sheboygan Police Department will not be releasing any further information at this time.

Did you know that e-bike crashes have increased in Wisconsin by 171% between 2022 and 2025 and that hospitals across the country have reported serious injuries due to e-bike crashes have increased up to 700%?

If you allow your children to operate an e-bike, we urge you to educate them before allowing them to ride. Ensure they understand they are required to follow traffic laws and regulations including all traffic signs. Encourage them to wear a helmet when riding. Ride with them to ensure they are engaging in safe riding practices. Also, it’s a good idea to check to make sure it is legal prior to allowing them to ride. You may be cited for allowing them to operate a motor vehicle without a license.

An e-bike crash has the potential to cause serious injuries and unexpected financial burdens.

The Sheboygan Police Department is educating officers and focusing patrols on dangerous e-bike behavior and illegal e-bike and e-moto operation.

The City of Sheboygan Police and Fire Departments, in partnership with the Sheboygan Area School District, law enforcement agencies from throughout Sheboygan County, and other community partners, will conduct a joint Critical Incident Training exercise on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The training will take place at Horace Mann Middle School, located at 2820 Union Avenue in the City of Sheboygan. To provide a realistic training environment, Horace Mann Middle School and the surrounding campus, including the soccer fields and parking lots, will be closed to the public for the duration of the exercise.
The training will be facilitated by the Mercyhealth Trauma Preparedness Team, a nationally recognized leader in emergency preparedness and critical incident training. Drawing on extensive experience in healthcare, public safety, and multi-agency response, the team will provide participants with realistic, scenario-based instruction focused on active threat response, Rescue Task Force operations, and coordinated emergency response. Their expertise will help ensure all participating agencies are training using current best practices and proven response strategies.
This collaborative training is part of an ongoing commitment to keeping our community safe. By bringing together law enforcement, fire personnel, school staff, emergency medical professionals, and other emergency responders, participants will strengthen communication, coordination, and response capabilities to ensure a faster, more effective response during a critical incident.
Residents may notice an increased presence of police officers, firefighters, emergency vehicles, ambulances, and other first responders in the area throughout the day. All surrounding streets will remain open, and there is no threat to the public. The activity is a planned training exercise designed to enhance public safety.
To help ensure the training is conducted safely and effectively, community members are asked to avoid the immediate training area and refrain from gathering near the campus. This will allow participants to remain fully focused on the exercise while creating the most realistic training environment possible.
We appreciate the continued support and cooperation of our residents. The safety of our students, staff, residents, and visitors is a shared responsibility, and strong partnerships, ongoing training, and proactive planning help ensure our community is prepared for emergencies. Did you know not all e-bikes are legal in Wisconsin? If you own a class 1, 2, or 3 e-bike it is legal and has the same rights and privileges as a bicycle. See the attached photo for examples.

If an e-bike doesn’t have functioning pedals it is not legal. These are referred to as e-motos and are illegal to ride on roads and sidewalks. Also, if your e-bike has an electric motor greater than 750 watts, or does not comply with the restrictions in the photo it is not legal.

Riders of illegal e-bikes and e-motos face increased forfeitures for driving on streets or sidewalks. Driver license restrictions apply to these vehicles. If you don’t have a license, or have a suspended or revoked license, you are subject to citation or arrest. Because illegal e-bikes are considered motor vehicles, you cannot ride one on a public road or sidewalk if you are under the influence of alcohol or a restricted controlled substance.

This morning, our officers recovered a vehicle that was stolen from a community member during the overnight/early morning hours. While several arrests have been made, the investigation remains active and additional arrests are expected.

We are asking for your help to increase guardianship and reduce opportunities for criminal activity in our neighborhoods. Locking cars and garages, removing keys and valuables from vehicles, installing motion activated lighting, and communicating with our neighbors are small steps that have a huge impact on crime reduction.

We have a very safe community and with your help, we can keep it that way!

On 08/08/2026 Officers responded to a missing person complaint in the 500 block of S Water St. We are looking for help locating Marek Reinl. The last time family saw him was on 08/07/2026 at 08:30am. Marek has some health issues that cause his caregivers increased concern for his welfare.

Marek is described as:
White male, approx. 5ft 10in, approx., 170 pounds, with green eyes, brown/graying hair, and a beard. Marek has a noticeable limp and frequents the downtown Sheboygan area
