City of Sheboygan Announces IHRAโs Cancellation of
Powerboat Race Activities; Land-Based Weekend Events Will
Continue
Sheboygan, WI โ July 14, 2026 The City of Sheboygan regretfully shares the cancellation of the Midwest Challenge Powerboat Races due to unforeseen staffing and operational issues affecting the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), the eventโs organizing body. The powerboat races were scheduled to take place on
August 8th and 9th
IHRA officials informed the City on July 13th that they are unable to provide the necessary staffing and operational support required to safely and successfully host the event. As a result, IHRA has communicated their decision to cancel the racing portion of the weekendโs activities.
โThis is an incredibly disappointing outcome for our community, local businesses, and the many fans who look forward to this event each year. Unfortunately, IHRA could not provide the race operations staffing needed to safely run the boat races, and that shortfall has led to their cancellation.โ said Mayor Ryan Sorenson. The Powerboat Races has historically drawn visitors from across the region, contributing to Sheboyganโs tourism and waterfront activity. City leaders express appreciation for the communityโs understanding and for the continued local partnerships.
Despite the cancellation of the racing component, the City is working with local partners to adjust and preserve portions of the weekendโs planned land-based activities like the Friday Block Party at City Green and King Park Bites and Brews event. Details regarding modified programming, including vendor participation and shoreline events, will be announced shortly.
โWe know how important this weekend is to our community and we are committed to making sure there is still plenty to celebrate along the lakefront,โ said Public Works Director Travis Peterson. โOur team has been working closely with community partners to ensure the block party remains a highlight of the weekend. Our partners are excited to still bring the weekend events that will still give people a great reason to come out, enjoy our local parks and beaches.โ
The City of Sheboygan is evaluating future race partnerships and remains committed to exploring opportunities to bring the event back in the future under more favorable conditions.
Additional updates will be shared as they become available.
