An Ames Police Department patrol vehicle was struck while an officer was working on the interstate last night. The officer sustained injuries but is expected to be okay. The driver who caused the crash was arrested and charged with Failure to Change Lane Upon Approach to an Emergency Stationary Vehicle Causing Injury.

This incident is a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement, firefighters, EMS personnel, tow truck operators, and highway workers who work alongside moving traffic.

When you see flashing emergency lights, slow down and move over when it is safe to do so. One moment of inattention can change everything.

Slow down. Move over. Pay attention. Get home safely.

Sheffield Rescue Unit, Sheffield Fire Dept and Buda Fire Dept all participated in the Touch a truck event today hosted by the Sheffield library.

Kids (and adults) love to get in and touch and check out all the cool things. Seeing all of this up close, it can make it less scary when the rigs are needed for an emergency.

If you have a youth group and would like to visit with a fire or ambulance station, contact your local Fire Chief or EMS Director, most love to do a show around.

We are so incredibly proud of Jonathan!

We are so excited to celebrate with Jonathon Carroll as he has passed all requirements and has advanced from EMT to Paramedic!

This was a one year course consisting of approximately 500 class hours and 500 field hours.

Jonathon is trained in advanced life saving, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, international trauma life support and advanced airway management.

Jonathon is currently employed with 1033 ambulance out of Spring Valley and Sunset Ridge EMS.
However, he is true to his EMS roots of volunteering for both Sheffield ambulance and Buda fire department.

Join us in wishing Jonathan the very best in his Paramedic career.

It's a sad day.

It's a sad day.

Randolph Mantooth, known for playing paramedic John Gage on the “Emergency!” TV series in the 1970s, died July 9 in Ventura. He was 80.

I am a little upset this post has to be made. I’m not sure when we as a society quit caring for each other. Tonight my deputies, along with first responders from Adrian and EMS units from Bates County and Cass County responded to a very serious head on collision on 18 Highway.

The first responders did what they always do. They showed up, worked like the best team in America for people they didn’t even know.

Two people, very seriously hurt and required two helicopters so they could be transported to a trauma center. But as the first helicopter was landing, my deputies reported seeing a drone in the air over the crash scene.

Let me be clear. You have a right to own a drone, fly a drone and take footage of things in public. But what you don’t have a right to do is compromise the safety of those in the helicopter or on the ground. You don’t have a right to hinder or delay that response because a drone in the air prevents a helicopter from taking back off or landing in a timely matter.

While I hope this is a one time thing and whoever the drone owners are realize now the danger they put all the first responders and helicopters pilots in. I hope they realize that a patient’s life or death could come down to every precious minute.

If this behavior continues on scenes like this, then my agency will begin the acquisition of any technology we need to identify drones owners and purchase technology that will disrupt the drones ability to continue to stay in the air. We will put the safety of all involve and down your drone. You will be held accountable for interfering.

If you own a drone you have the responsibility to know the laws pertaining to their use. Be smart. The people who we are helping maybe one of your family members or friends.

Sheriff Chad Anderson.
