Enjoyed the day promoting fire safety with our partners in Heath and Colrain!

Remember, if faced with a stovetop fire: "put a lid on it" and turn off the heat.

Working smoke alarms save lives, full stop.

Working smoke alarms save lives, full stop.

starts one week from today! When you this year, remember to check your alarms when you change your clocks. The manufacturing date is printed on the back. Replace alarms that are out of date and replace alkaline batteries in alarms that use them. Choosing a new alarm? Select one from a well-known national brand with a sealed, long-life battery and a hush feature. Look for the mark of an independent testing lab like UL or Intertek/ETL: https://ow.ly/K8QQ50TR42s

Hey all, we’ve received some feedback that some in the community are displeased with a comment made by a member of our department on their personal social media. While I may not agree with the words chosen, personally and as an organization we value free speech afforded by our 1st Amendment rights whether written on social media or voiced through peaceful protests. We encourage respectful dialogue where we may have differences of opinion, and sometimes we may agree to disagree on some issues. Please realize that we’re a group of different individuals with different views but we all work together to see that any and all residents and visitors are helped at a time of need. Thank you to those who brought your concerns forward personally as it allows us to talk through those concerns rather than hear via some anonymous posting. - John Taylor, Fire Chief

Good advice to check the vents for your propane furnaces and boilers. Hope you are enjoying this New England snow.

Good advice to check the vents for your propane furnaces and boilers. Hope you are enjoying this New England snow.

Remember to keep vents and flues clear during and after the big storm. If snowdrifts or piles of shoveled snow block exhaust vents outside, can rise to deadly levels inside. We can't see, smell, or taste this silent killer, so be sure you have working alarms on every level of your home: https://ow.ly/vaIF50UVzue

CLOSE THE DOOR. While normally we promote an "open door policy" - if you are involved in a fire, CLOSE THE DOOR to control fire spread. In this short video the Fire Safety Research Institute does an exceptional job educating us all about saving ourselves from a fire: the importance of escape planning, smoke alarms, and the protection you get from a closed door. (Some of the visual material could be disturbing but we think it is super valuable to know.)

Watch to see how fast fire and smoke can spread through a two-story home, just how little time you have to escape, and why you need to plan ahead to save lives.…

Steady week of action here. Two permitted burns went out of control in Town, covered Greenfield while they were at a brush fire, and sent the communications truck to Ashfield, in addition to our "normal" calls and training.

DCR Forest Fire Control reports that while the precipitation in 2025 has been normal the area is still dry from 2024's drought. Be cautious with outside fires, remember that a permit is required for open burning, and never discard your ashes or a cigarette where it can ignite grass/leaves/brush.

Hey. Really interesting story by WWLP channel 22 about the world of emergency response as it exists here in 2025.

But cities and towns across the country are seeing a shortage of people seeking careers in law enforcement, firefighting, and emergency medical services. This week on 22NewsInFocus we're looking at what's being done to recruit more people into those careers here in western Massachusetts.

Plan and practice home fire drills at least twice a year. Make sure you know two ways out of each room. More fire safety information at http://www.usfa.fema....
