🔋 BATTERY BREAKDOWN: Household Batteries

They power everything from smoke alarms and toys to remotes and flashlights, but even the everyday batteries around your home need to be handled, stored and disposed of properly.

Shelby Township Fire Department Lt./Inspector Muylaert kicks off our new Battery Breakdown series with a look at common household batteries and a few simple safety tips you should know.

Thank you to Brave Fire Protection for building and donating an FDC training prop to our department.

The prop will be used during training to simulate connecting to a building’s fire protection system. This is a critical step in suppression operations because supplying the system increases the water available to sprinklers in the affected area and provides water to the building’s standpipe system, allowing crews to deploy handlines more quickly to upper floors or remote fire areas.

Without this prop, it is difficult to provide realistic hands-on training or demonstrate the important role that sprinkler and standpipe systems play in controlling a fire. The prop will also allow crews to practice skills to shut down individual sprinkler heads, decreasing property damage.

Public Safety Reminder: Propane W**d Burners Can Spark Dangerous Fires

On Saturday, July 11, Shelby Township firefighters responded to two separate house fires within just three hours of each other, less than a mile apart. Both fires were caused by the use of propane w**d burners.

Thankfully, no one was injured and our crews were able to stop both fires before they caused significant damage.

The combination of hot temperatures, low humidity and even a light breeze created conditions where fire could spread much more quickly than expected. While propane w**d burners can be an effective tool, these summer conditions can turn a small flame into a fast-moving fire.

If you're using a propane w**d burner this summer, please take extra precautions:

🔥 Avoid using them on windy days or when grass and vegetation are dry.
💧 Keep a garden hose or fire extinguisher within reach.
🏡 Stay well away from homes, fences, decks, mulch, and other combustible materials.
👀 Never leave the torch unattended, even for a moment.
✔️ When you're finished, check the area carefully for hidden embers. Fires can smolder for hours before becoming visible.

A simple yard project can quickly become a serious emergency under the right conditions. Taking a few extra minutes to work safely can help protect your home, your neighbors and our community.
