On June 2, 2026, CCHD was notified of a fox that tested positive for rabies. The animal was found on Weatherford Drive in Shelby.

Any person exposed to potentially infectious saliva from an animal should contact their healthcare provider or CCHD for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact us at 980-484-5169 or 980-484-5100.

Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal with unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884.

Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva.

More information on rabies prevention can be found in the Full Press Release, available on our website under “News.”

💤The baby product aisle can be overwhelming—especially when it comes to sleep. Many products marketed for infants are unsafe and may increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), despite claims that suggest otherwise. Join Dr. Jennifer Shu, Medical Editor of HealthyChildren.org, with infant safety experts Dr. Ben Hoffman and Dr. Erin Mannen for a practical, evidence-based conversation about choosing safe sleep products for babies.

Register: https://bit.ly/4utJ2Mu

They’ll discuss topics such as:
🔹Which sleep products are considered safe, including cribs, bassinets, and play yards
🔹Why products like loungers, inclined sleepers, and nursing pillows are dangerous for sleep
🔹How to make confident baby gear choices that reduce risk and promote safer sleep

Backed by 67,000 American Academy of Pediatrics member physicians, HealthyChildren.org provides trusted, up-to-date parenting guidance. When you register for this webinar, you’ll begin receiving the monthly HealthyChildren.org e‑newsletter.

💚May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

The CCHD team painted rocks during National Public Health Week, and now we’re passing the fun on to you!

🧠Spending time outdoors boosts your mental health. To help you get outside, we have hidden rocks in parks and outdoor spaces across Cleveland County. Get outside and find those rocks!

📍Hint: Use the Park Locator Map at healthytogethercleveland.org/active-living/ for a few ideas.

Have fun, enjoy the sun, and good luck!

Shoutout to our intern, Hadley, for placing the rocks and helping to develop this post!
