Following the recent press release from NC DHHS regarding confirmed rabies cases, we want to ensure that anyone who believes they may have been exposed receives appropriate guidance.

At this time, we are not aware of any events involving the Farm Adventures mobile petting zoo that were held within Cleveland County. However, we recognize that many Cleveland County residents travel and attend events outside of the county and may have attended an event where a potential exposure occurred.

If you attended an event with the Farm Adventures mobile petting zoo between July 28 and August 27, 2026, and believe you may have had contact with a rabies-infected animal, please contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5100.

Our team can provide additional information and guidance regarding potential exposure and appropriate next steps. Please do not delay in reaching out if you believe you may have been exposed.

We will continue to share updated information as it becomes available from NC DHHS.

On August 27, 2026, CCHD was notified of a racoon that tested positive for rabies. The animal was found on Peachtree Road in Shelby.

Any person exposed to potentially infectious saliva from an animal should contact their healthcare provider or CCHD for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact us at 980-484-5169 or 980-484-5100.

Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal with unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884.

Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva.

More information on rabies prevention can be found in the Full Press Release, available on our website under β€œNews.”

πŸ’š August is Child Support Awareness Month πŸ’š

Child support is more than a payment β€” it's about connection. It helps kids stay financially secure, keeps both parents involved in their lives, and gives families the stability they need to thrive.

Behind every case is a parent showing up for their child, even when life is complicated.

This month, we're recognizing the caseworkers, parents, and partners who make it all work and reminding residents that support is available if you need it.

If your family needs help, resources are just a click away.
