Communities In Schools of Cleveland County The mission of Communities in Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Through a school-based coordinator, Communities in Schools connects students and their families to critical community resources tailored to local needs. By providing students with a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a healthy start and future, a marketable skill upon graduation, and a chance to give back to peers and the community, Communities In Schools has become the nation's leading dropout prevention organization and the only one proven to both decrease dropout rates and increase graduation rates. Every year 1.2 million students drop out of school. What that means is every nine seconds, a student in America loses his or her path to a better future. By empowering students to achieve in school and life, we are building a stronger America, where every person is capapble of reaching his or her greatest potential.

Mission: The mission of Communities in Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Some of our kids joined in with Shelby Police Department today to see how they serve our community during the holiday season. It was good for them to experience the real meaning of service, which is being a helping hand in doing something to build others up. Our staff, on the other hand, was mostly there to get Christmas pictures with the police. Just kidding! 😂🤣 Elder Sherman Thompson

Hi, friends! We're looking for a job placement for one of our recent alums. He is a first-generation high-school graduate (yes, that's right--the first of his family to finish high school! 👏) and is interested in an entry-level construction position. He is currently employed but is looking to secure his future. If you know of a potential opportunity, please message us or comment below. ⬇️

Huge thanks to 4imprint for awarding us a #4onebyone grant to be used toward this tent! Our plans for the grant shifted due to COVID-19, but this is working wonderfully for staff meetings until we can welcome our kids and families back to events! Thank you, 4imprint, for your support of our work!

Special shoutout to the gentleman in Sam's Club - Gastonia today who saw us pushing hundreds of pounds of food and juice for families, asked what we were doing it for, and handed us a $100 bill on the spot. That kind of generosity just melted our hearts. We are more thankful for that kind of heart than for the money. ❤️

Today marked the end of an era. We enjoyed food and fellowship with our 21st Century Community Learning Centers colleagues for the last time. We will miss their friendship and camaraderie greatly, and we know our worlds won't be the same without them.

It's been said about teachers that good ones are like candles--they consume themselves to light the way for others. That's how we feel about our 21st Century staff who have tirelessly and selflessly served kids who desperately needed them--day in and day out--pouring out themselves to fill up others. We are immensely grateful--not only for their impact, but also for their example.

Yesterday afternoon, this year's Cleveland County Chamber Leadership Cleveland County cohort visited our 21st Century Community Learning Centers after-school program at Shelby High School-Home of the Golden Lions. Thanks to our own CIS Leadership Cleveland County alumna, Stacey Spicer, for arranging the opportunity! Our students enjoyed meeting local professionals and sharing with them their ideas about leadership. Stay tuned to see what they were thinking.

Today, we are thankful for our lifesaver at Burns Middle School, Student Support Coach Maricara Montgomery. When we asked Maricara the best CIS-related thing that has happened to her recently, she shared that she finally had a breakthrough with one of the students in her class who had been virtually silent the entire year but finally spoke to her and even smiled. We are so grateful for her constant presence in kids' lives and for the safe space she creates in her program that makes them feel comfortable enough to open up.

Thank you, Mrs. Montgomery, for being a lifesaver for our kids.

I'd like to hear your organization's response to statements in defense of slavery made by Sam Davis of Dragonfly Marketing since you are prominently listed as one of the clients for his business. Here's what Mr. Davis posted to the Shelby Star page: ""I would like to point out that slaves were not FREE labor. Each was purchased with money and given a place to live and food to eat. So it wasn't free labor. Both parties enjoyed benefits of the system."
