Communities In Schools of Cleveland County The mission of Communities in Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Through a school-based coordinator, Communities in Schools connects students and their families to critical community resources tailored to local needs. By providing students with a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a healthy start and future, a marketable skill upon graduation, and a chance to give back to peers and the community, Communities In Schools has become the nation's leading dropout prevention organization and the only one proven to both decrease dropout rates and increase graduation rates. Every year 1.2 million students drop out of school. What that means is every nine seconds, a student in America loses his or her path to a better future. By empowering students to achieve in school and life, we are building a stronger America, where every person is capapble of reaching his or her greatest potential.

Mission: The mission of Communities in Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Are young people in your life curious about social movements and how they are impacting us locally?

Cleveland County 4-H in collaboration with other community organizations and leaders has organized this Community Conversation event.

This event will be a space for youth to be curious and brave, as they process current events and the implications on their life and the lives of others. The target audience for this event is youth and families, but it is open to the general public.

This is an online-only event. The event will be livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook Live. Details about how to join the event will be coming soon.

The opinions expressed by individual panelists at the event are their own and do not reflect the opinions of Cooperative Extension, 4-H, or other community organizations involved in organizing the event.

A list of the panelists participating will be provided closer to the event.

Today marked the end of an era. We enjoyed food and fellowship with our 21st Century Community Learning Centers colleagues for the last time. We will miss their friendship and camaraderie greatly, and we know our worlds won't be the same without them.

It's been said about teachers that good ones are like candles--they consume themselves to light the way for others. That's how we feel about our 21st Century staff who have tirelessly and selflessly served kids who desperately needed them--day in and day out--pouring out themselves to fill up others. We are immensely grateful--not only for their impact, but also for their example.

Yesterday afternoon, this year's Cleveland County Chamber Leadership Cleveland County cohort visited our 21st Century Community Learning Centers after-school program at Shelby High School-Home of the Golden Lions. Thanks to our own CIS Leadership Cleveland County alumna, Stacey Spicer, for arranging the opportunity! Our students enjoyed meeting local professionals and sharing with them their ideas about leadership. Stay tuned to see what they were thinking.

Today, we are thankful for our lifesaver at Burns Middle School, Student Support Coach Maricara Montgomery. When we asked Maricara the best CIS-related thing that has happened to her recently, she shared that she finally had a breakthrough with one of the students in her class who had been virtually silent the entire year but finally spoke to her and even smiled. We are so grateful for her constant presence in kids' lives and for the safe space she creates in her program that makes them feel comfortable enough to open up.

Thank you, Mrs. Montgomery, for being a lifesaver for our kids.

Last week, our after school program at Shelby Intermediate School hosted a Family Engagement event with a focus on “Vision” and “Young Entrepreneurship.” Our guest speakers were Seneca, Santana, and Sanai Epps, who discussed ways they have found to utilize Youtube, not only for fun, but for their education! “If there is a math problem that you do not understand, you can Youtube it!” Thank you to these young people for inspiring us to keep searching for answers!

Today, we checked in with our lifesaver at Burns High School, Mrs. Sherry Key Beam. When asked the best CIS-related thing that has happened in the past week, Sherry shared about a student who didn't think he could afford college and, as such, refused to apply. She began talking with him about scholarships and introducing him to prospective opportunities, and he realized his dream might actually be possible. Now, he has made several applications and is looking forward to continuing his education next year. We are so grateful for Sherry's influence and the impact it will have on students long after they finish high school.

Thank you, Mrs. Beam, for being a lifesaver for our kids.

Our lifesaver of the day is Mrs. Lendra Phillips, Graduation Coach at Shelby High School-Home of the Golden Lions. Lendra is a strong, calming, persuasive presence for the students she serves, and we are thankful for her influence. When asked the best CIS-related thing that has happened this week, Lendra shared about having met a young man that was preceded by a reputation that seemed daunting, but upon meeting him becoming aware that he simply needs presence and attention in order to feel compelled to improve his behavior and academic performance. She is looking forward to further developing a relationship with him and providing him the resources and support he needs to be successful.

Thank you, Mrs. Phillips, for being a lifesaver for our kids.

This afternoon, we had the distinct pleasure of being at Cleveland Country Club to share with Shelby Rotary Club about the meaningful work we do here at Communities In Schools of Cleveland County. One of our Kings Mountain High School seniors, Dishon, made a few remarks to the group about his challenges in school and his transformative relationship with his Graduation Coach, Mrs. Woody. His words were, "I wouldn't be here without her help." Dishon is pictured talking with Mrs. Woody and Shelby Police Department Chief Jeff Ledford.

Our kids deserve every opportunity, and we absolutely can't wait to see Dishon walk across that stage in June and are so looking forward to his future success!

I'd like to hear your organization's response to statements in defense of slavery made by Sam Davis of Dragonfly Marketing since you are prominently listed as one of the clients for his business. Here's what Mr. Davis posted to the Shelby Star page: ""I would like to point out that slaves were not FREE labor. Each was purchased with money and given a place to live and food to eat. So it wasn't free labor. Both parties enjoyed benefits of the system."
