The Burrow

The Burrow The Burrow, built in 1928 by AV Hamrick, Sr, is a consistent refuge for family, and for friends on occasion. Abernathy, at 804 West Marion Street.

"I have changed my place, I have left the upper world and am in my burrow, and I feel its effect at once." -Franz Kafka Alger Vason Hamrick and Ettie Abernathy Hamrick were married On October 4, 1917, and lived ten years with her father, T.J. They then built The Burrow in 1928 on his father Leander Hamrick’s wooded property farther out on West Marion, that was for many years known as Lover’s Lane.

Alger chose the lot because the tree in the front yard was his favorite climbing tree as a boy, due to the angle on which it grew. "I have changed my place, I have left the upper world and am in my burrow, and I feel its effect at once. It is a new world, endowing me with new powers, and what I felt as fatigue up there is no longer that here."
-Franz Kafka
