Meet Brooks also known as " Bark Twain." This loveable guy is a 7 yo neutered male who is current on all vaccinations and is heartworm negative. Here are the details on Mr. Bark Twain:

🦴 While he may be 7 years old, this guy is full of life and has many years of adventures ahead of him. He loves running with our shelter strides group but is also happy to take a leisurely walk in the woods.

🐾 He is friendly with other dogs but is not a fan of cats. So a feline free home would be best.

🦴 He has had some masses removed but nothing is slowing this loving guy down. With his great leash manners he is sure to make someone a great walking buddy.

Brooks is just waiting for his perfect family to show up and give him a home! If you are looking for an outgoing, friendly, loveable dog look no further! Message us with any other questions or if you would like to come meet this sweet pup.

Cleveland County Animal Services wishes everyone a Happy (and safe) Fourth of July! That said, if you have pets be sure to follow a few helpful hints to keep them safe this weekend.

Be sure your pet has some type of easy to read identification preferably with your contact information imprinted. If your pet is also microchipped, be certain the microchip company has the most current contact information for you. Lastly, take a picture of your pet. This will be vital in your recovery efforts should they become scared and escape.

Are you looking for a dog that is very trainable and eager to please? Look no further, BJ is your guy! BJ is very sweet and loves attention. He loves other dogs and did great on his group walks. He would do best in a home with no cats or other small animals, as he does have a very high prey drive. He is fully vaccinated and neutered, but he is heartworm positive-- not to worry though, treatment is provided through our foster to adopt program! Come meet BJ today, he has so much affection to give!

PLEASE SHARE: There's a rumor making the rounds of the internet that hand sanitizer contains the same ingredient as antifreeze and can kill pets if they lick it off your hands. THIS IS NOT TRUE.

Here's the post from Snopes.com - a site that debunks rumors with the explanation:

Ethylene glycol, used in antifreeze, is indeed extremely poisonous to animals. But does hand sanitizer actually contain this chemical?

PUBLISHED 17 MARCH 2020

Claim: Hand sanitizer is a threat to pets because it contains an ingredient also found in antifreeze.

FALSE.

As governments fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Snopes is fighting an “infodemic” of rumors and misinformation.

As concern over the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus disease increased globally, so too did the demand for hand sanitizer. Along with that came unsupported claims about the dangers hand sanitizer presents to pets.

Since mid-March, the claim that hand sanitizer “has the same ingredients as antifreeze” — and therefore could theoretically kill your pet if they lick a recently sanitized hand — has gone viral.

But this assertion is not true.

The chemical of concern in antifreeze is ethylene glycol. Hand sanitizers, which are either ethanol- or isopropanol-based, do not contain ethylene glycol. It is true that ethylene glycol is very dangerous to pets (and humans) if ingested, even in small quantities, but such a fact is irrelevant to the issue at hand.

Although ethanol poisoning (i.e what happens when a human drinks a medically dangerous amount of alcohol) is possible if a pet were to consume large quantities of hand sanitizer, an animal merely licking a recently sanitized hand is not cause for concern. For that reason, the claim is “False.”

For the safety of our staff and the residents of Cleveland County, effective March 17, 2020, Animal Services will be limiting some non-essential activities and services in response to recommendations and guidance from the NC Department of Health and Human Services and the NC State Governor’s Office. Animal Services will be significantly reducing staffing presence at both the animal shelter and in the field. Additionally, to minimize person-to-person contact, we will utilize teleworking and split shifts to the highest degree possible. These measures are intended to reduce risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus, as well as working to minimize the number of new animals entering our shelters requiring the need for additional personnel. The animals located at the shelter will continue to receive regular daily care and necessary medical attention.

Animal Services is part of the public safety network in Cleveland County and as such we have an obligation to provide emergency services during disasters both natural and man-made. To that end, we will be taking the following actions:

Hours open to the public: Mon-Fri 10:00am-1:00pm (Closed Wednesday). Visitor limits may be imposed in the event of crowding. Shelter services will be limited to adoptions, citation payments and stray animal intake.

Animal adoptions after 1:00pm daily will be by appointment only. To request an appointment for an animal in our shelter, please email [email protected]

Intake of healthy owned animals will be suspended.

Walk-in Rabies vaccinations are temporarily suspended.

Field services will continue with limited staffing and calls will be prioritized and answered accordingly.

Volunteer program is temporarily suspended.

Community Cat program is temporarily suspended.

Frequently touched surfaces such as workstations, countertops, and doorknobs will be cleaned and sanitized by staff daily.

Thank you for your support and understanding!

Animal Services Staff
