Structure Fire – Dover Baptist Church
1501 Polkville Road, Shelby, NC

On Sunday, October 18, 2026, shortly after 7:00 a.m., Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 1501 Polkville Road, Dover Baptist Church, in reference to a reported fire alarm activation. Upon arrival of Cleveland Fire personnel, the incident was upgraded to a working structure fire.

Multiple Cleveland County fire departments responded to the scene, the City of Shelby Fire Department’s ladder company was requested, Cleveland County Tanker Task Force, Cleveland County EMS, and the Cleveland County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Cleveland County Fire Marshal’s Office. At this time, no foul play is suspected.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the congregation, leadership, and entire church family of Dover Baptist Church during this difficult time.

Today, our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of one of our own. On behalf of everyone at our department, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of the Cleveland County paramedic who dedicated their life to serving others.
While words cannot ease the pain of this tremendous loss, we hope you find comfort in knowing that their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Please keep their loved ones, the entire Cleveland County EMS family, and all those whose lives were touched by this remarkable individual in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Rest in peace. Your service, your dedication, and the difference you made in the lives of so many will always be remembered.

America is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, and Americans everywhere will be enjoying the Fourth of July holiday with family and friends.

The Shelby Fire and Rescue Department would like you and your family to have a fun and safe holiday weekend.

Did You Know?
• North Carolina emergency departments treat an average of 192 people annually for fireworks-related injuries, with roughly 72% occurring in July.
• Fireworks cause thousands of injuries annually in the U.S., with recent data from 2024 showing 14,700 emergency room visits and 11 deaths.
• Children under 5 years of age accounted for more than half of the total estimated injuries.
• Handheld sparklers can burn at a temperature of 1,200 to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Fireworks have started over 31,000 fires, including structure, vehicle, and outside fires.
• Half of firework-related injuries seen at emergency rooms, were extremities: hand, finger, or leg.

Top Safety Tips:
• Leave fireworks to the professionals.
• Keep pets indoors.
• Use glow sticks, they glow in the dark and are a safe alternative to a sparkler.

This past week we had two junior members attend the North Carolina High School Firefighter Challenge hosted by NC OSFM. Junior Firefighter Grayson Titica and Junior Firefighter Issac James were apart of Battalion 2 which was the top battalion of the week. As a result of their hard work during the week, the battalion was awarded black Lakeland Pacific helmets.

We would like to thank NC OFSM for the opportunity for our younger members to participate in something like this. This opportunity allowed these young firefighters to collaborate with other firefighters from across the state and work on their firefighting skills.

Today at 14:00 hours, Engine 202 & Tanker 205 responded to a Mobile Home Fire. Units assisted Shanghai Volunteer Fire Department and Boiling Springs Fire & Rescue on scene with man power for fire suppression & overhaul.
