Our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters of Greenville Fire & Rescue and to the brothers and sisters of Red Oak Community Rural Fire Department. As they morn the lost of Firefighter/EMT Gary Cox.

Please keep Pitt Community College Fire Academy graduate Gary Cox's family, friends and fellow firefighters in your thoughts and prayers. Emergency workers found the 24-year-old’s body this morning, after an extensive search along the Tar River.

Gary, who started our academy in October 2019 and was nearing completion of Technical Rescue and HazMat training, disappeared Sunday while enjoying recreational time on the water with fellow firefighters.

A certified EMT from Goldsboro, Gary worked full-time for Greenville Fire/Rescue and was a volunteer with the Red Oak Community Rural Fire Department. He was a graduate of East Carolina University.

Earlier this spring, Gary was recorded on video reading from the book “The Three Bears” as part of a series of online story time videos that Red Oak firefighters created to entertain local children during the pandemic.
