Additional preparedness tips from Ready.gov

Keep important documents safe: Scan or photograph important documents and store them on a password-protected drive.

Maintain your kit: Check for expired items annually and replace them as needed.

Prepare for multiple locations: Create smaller emergency kits for your workplace and car, as you never know where you'll be when an emergency occurs.

Preparedness Month Week 2 this year focuses on:

Making a Family Emergency Plan and Securing Your Financial Future

Create a family emergency plan: This involves identifying risks in your area, such as tornados, earthquakes, or wildfires.

Establish communication strategies: Determine how you will get important notifications before, during, and after a disaster, and develop a plan for connecting with family members if you are separated

Identify safe spaces and meeting points: Pinpoint safe places in your home to shelter, like a basement, and designate safe meeting places for your family both inside and outside your neighborhood.

Address diverse needs: Plan for everyone in your household, including children, elders, pets, and people with disabilities.

Plan for financial security: Take steps to protect your household's finances, which may include developing a plan for financial recovery and building resilience.

Practice your plan: Regularly practice your family emergency plan to ensure everyone knows what to do in a real emergency

September is National Preparedness month

The first week focuses on making a personal and family emergency plan.

Does your family unit have a plan for disasters or emergencies?

Things your plan should include:

1. Research local hazards: Understand what natural disasters are most likely to affect your specific area.

2. Create a family communication plan: Discuss how you will get in touch with each other and where you will meet if separated during an emergency.

3. Discuss responsibilities: Determine what each family member will do to help in a disaster, including caring for pets or operating medical equipment.

4. Identify your specific needs: Think about unique needs such as medications, dietary restrictions, or supplies for family members with disabilities or infants.

5. Secure important documents: Gather and safeguard critical documents like insurance policies, birth certificates, and financial records.

6. Use online resources: Visit Ready.gov and the FEMA app for more information and planning tools.

Stay safe and be prepared!
