Spending this memorial day thinking about our darling, darling Philip Meltzer. He was a WWII veteran serving in the 390th Military Police in Belgium and Germany.

Of course, he has his favorite tree, the white oak,
carved into his stone.

A lover of poetry, the back contains a verse from the poem Thanatopsis.

Happy 10th anniversary to Meltzer Woods! 🌿

Exactly 10 years ago today, this beautiful old-growth forest officially opened to the public.

At the age of 90, Philip Meltzer finally achieved his life long dream of turning Meltzer Woods into a nature preserve that all could enjoy. Vice President Mike Pence joined him for the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

What will you discover this spring in Meltzer Woods? 🌱

The color of this lovely mushroom is baked right into its name: Laetiporus sulphureus. Chicken of the woods grows in fan-shaped layers that are orange-red to orange-yellow on top and sulfur-yellow below. Its overlapping clusters appear on dead or dying deciduous trees, as well as stumps, buried roots, and living trees. This one was found one spring at Meltzer Woods.

Reminder: state-dedicated nature preserves like this one are not open for foraging. Let the shroom's bright color be a feast for the eyes.
