Shelby County Public Schools is proud to announce the appointment of Ben Roberts as the district’s new Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP).
Ben currently serves as principal of Shelby Academy, where he provides leadership for several innovative district programs, including Ascension, the district’s alternative school setting; Cultivate, the online learning program; and the GED program serving students across Shelby County.
During his tenure at Shelby Academy, Roberts has led efforts to expand opportunities for students while fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Most recently, under his leadership, Shelby Academy earned the PEAK (Public Education Achieves in Kentucky) Award, one of the highest honors recognizing Kentucky public schools that make a significant positive impact on education. The school was also recognized with a Distinguished Award as one of the top alternative schools in the state. These accomplishments reflect Roberts’ commitment to student success, innovation, and creating meaningful opportunities for all learners.
Dr. Joshua Matthews commented on the hire stating, “Mr. Roberts is an excellent fit and the logical choice for this role. He has demonstrated strong leadership through innovative practices and a steadfast focus on students. Under his leadership, Shelby Academy has grown into one of the premier schools in the state. Mr. Roberts will excel as Director of Pupil Personnel for SCPS. Mr. Mike Clark will continue to oversee the DPP office in his role as Director of Student Services. However, as chronic absenteeism becomes part of Kentucky's accountability system, we want to be proactive in addressing this issue.”
Before becoming principal, Roberts served as the behavior consultant for Shelby County Public Schools, where he oversaw district-wide behavior programs, including PASS and highly structured behavior units. In this role, he played a key part in developing systems and supports that help students succeed both academically and behaviorally.
Throughout his career, Ben has been recognized for his passion for supporting students, building strong relationships with families, and leading programs that provide effective pathways for student growth and achievement. His work reflects a deep commitment to ensuring that every student has access to the resources and support needed to thrive.
Mr. Roberts shared, “I am honored to serve Shelby County Public Schools in this new capacity as Director of Pupil Personnel. I look forward to collaborating with our schools, students, and families to support all stakeholders and meet the diverse educational needs of our community.”
The Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP) serves as a key leader in supporting student success by ensuring accountability and providing meaningful support to students and families. At its core, this role focuses on promoting consistent student attendance, appropriate behavior, and full engagement in the educational process. The DPP provides leadership across all aspects of pupil attendance and enrollment, working collaboratively with school staff, families, and community partners to identify and address barriers that may impact a student’s success. When concerns arise related to attendance, behavior, or student well-being, the DPP helps coordinate interventions, connects families with resources, and supports schools in implementing solutions that keep students on track. Through a combination of compliance, collaboration, and proactive support, the Director of Pupil Personnel helps ensure that every student has access to and fully benefits from the educational opportunities available within the district.
As Director of Pupil Personnel, Roberts brings a student-centered approach, strong leadership experience, and a dedication to serving the whole child. In this role, he will oversee critical areas including student services, attendance, and district supports designed to promote student success. Shelby County Public Schools is confident that Ben’s experience and leadership will continue to strengthen the district’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of all students.
Mr. Roberts will begin his new position on July 1, 2026. A search for Mr. Roberts' successor will begin immediately.
