See below for a proper way to dispose of lithium-ion batteries thanks to the Northwest Iowa Landfill. The Sheldon bin is located in the south east corner of the community building parking lot. Please take advantage of this opportunity.

Northwest Iowa Landfill is making it easier and safer for residents to dispose of lithium-ion batteries by launching a new battery recycling program across its service area. The initiative is designed to help keep hazardous batteries out of the regular trash and recycling stream, reducing the growing risk of fires at landfills and recycling facilities.

- The use of lithium- ion batteries are part of our everyday life in multiple ways. In the last 10 years there has been a 900% increase in lithium battery usage. Improper disposal of these batteries in landfills & recycle centers are a big reason for fires in landfills and recycle centers. While exact figures aren’t available for all battery-caused fires, catastrophic waste/recycle facility fires caused by lithium-ion batteries has risen by 41% over the last 5 years. These incidents cause over $2.5 billion in damages.

Our landfill has installed specialized battery collection bins purchased from CleanRiver Recycling Solutions, a company based in Aurora, Ontario, Canada, that provides recycling collection systems used by municipalities and waste facilities throughout North America.
Residents are encouraged to bring rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to the designated collection location rather than placing them in household garbage or curbside recycling carts.
If you have a damaged lithium-ion battery PLEASE CALL US FOR PROPER DISPOSAL and do not put it in the bins.
For more information about the Northwest Iowa Landfill’s new battery recycling program, including accepted battery types and collection hours, contact Northwest Iowa Landfill directly. 4540 360th STREET | SHELDON, IOWA | 51201-8020 | 712-324-4026

With the recent rainfalls, predicted heavy rain and potential flooding we would like to remind everyone that sump pumps must discharge to their yard, a street, or a storm sewer by the street. Please make sure they are not discharging into the sanitary sewer plumbing. Discharging into the sanitary sewer is illegal and most importantly greatly increases the odds of sewer back up into your home and your neighbors homes. Please be a responsible homeowner and check your sump pump discharge today. We do not want a repeat of 2024! Your cooperation is much appreciated.
