🚨 Red Flag Warning in Effect May 15, 2026 🚨

The Shell Lake Fire Department would like to inform and remind residents and visitors that a Red Flag Warning has been issued for tomorrow, May 15th, meaning conditions are favorable for rapid fire spread due to dry fuels, low humidity, and gusty winds.

🔥 Burning Reminder for Shell Lake: The City of Shell Lake follows Wisconsin DNR burning restrictions, which means all burning within city limits must comply with current DNR rules and any active fire danger restrictions.

Please remember burning restrictions also include:

Leaf and brush burning
Debris piles
Any open burning not specifically permitted

Please take a moment to check conditions and restrictions before burning and consider postponing any fires until conditions improve.

Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe and prevent wildfires. Thank you for your cooperation and caution during elevated fire risk conditions.

🔥 DNR Burning Conditions - Red Flag Warning April 22, 2026🔥

Today, the Wisconsin DNR has issued a red flag warning for elevated fire danger conditions, meaning outdoor burning can ignite and spread much faster than normal.

Shell Lake Fire Department reminds all residents that the City of Shell Lake follows all State of Wisconsin burning restrictions and laws. When the DNR issues warnings or restrictions, they apply here locally as well.

🚫 Please do NOT conduct open burning during periods of high fire danger or burn bans.
🌬️ Even a light breeze can carry embers quickly into dry grass, brush, or wooded areas.
🔥 Never leave any fire unattended — even small recreational fires.
💧 Always have a water source or extinguisher nearby when burning is allowed.
📞 If you see an unattended or suspicious fire, call 911 immediately.

Before burning, please remember to check burning conditions and restrictions by calling 1-888-WIS-BURN.

We appreciate everyone doing their part to keep our community safe. These conditions can change quickly, and a little caution goes a long way in preventing wildfires and protecting homes, property, and first responders.

Stay safe 🚒

Wildfire Danger Season is Upon Us🚨

As we move into spring, wildfire danger will be increasing across Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports that nearly 129 wildfires have already burned over 352 acres this year.

🔥 Burning Regulations (DNR)
Before doing any outdoor burning:
✔️ You may need a free DNR burn permit
✔️ You MUST check daily burn restrictions
✔️ Restrictions may limit burn times, pile sizes, or ban burning entirely
✔️ Conditions can change quickly—check every day you plan to burn

👉 Please note:
The City of Shell Lake follows Wisconsin DNR burning restrictions. If burning is restricted or suspended by the DNR, it applies locally as well.

⚠️ Leading Causes of Wildfires in Wisconsin
The majority of wildfires are preventable. The most common causes include:
• Debris burning (the #1 cause)
• Unattended campfires or burn piles
• Hot ashes improperly disposed
• Equipment sparks (chains, trailers, machinery)
• Grills, ci******es, and recreational vehicles
Wisconsin DNR

🔥 Bottom line:
Spring is Wisconsin’s most active wildfire season. One small spark can quickly turn into a large fire under current conditions. Let’s work together to protect our community, homes, and forests.

Stay safe.

🚨 ICE SAFETY REMINDER 🚨

We know those early-ice walleyes are tempting (and delicious ), but no fish is worth your life.

Last weekend, Shell Lake Fire responded to a call for an individual who went through the ice. We are thankful the individual made it out of the water and survived — but situations like this can turn deadly fast. Early-season ice is unpredictable, changes quickly, and can look safer than it is.

Before you venture out, PLEASE make sure you're making smart decisions:

❄️ General Ice Thickness Guidelines

< 4 inches – Stay off. Too thin to support you.

4 inches – OK for a single person on foot

5–7 inches – Snowmobile or ATV

8–12 inches – Small car

12–15 inches – Medium truck

These are general guidelines — ice thickness is NEVER uniform. Check frequently as you move.

❄️ Safety Tips

Carry ice picks, a throw rope, and wear a floatation jacket.

Never fish alone on early ice.

Check ice with a spud bar every few steps.

Avoid areas with moving water, inlets, outlets, and pressure ridges.

When in doubt — DON’T GO OUT.

❄️ Where to Find Ice Condition Information

While no source can guarantee safety, these can help you stay informed:

Local bait shops and fishing forums

Wisconsin DNR Ice Safety Page

NOAA & local weather forecasts

Community reports from Shell Lake area groups

We love seeing everyone out enjoying the lake — just make sure you’re here to enjoy it all season long. Stay smart, stay safe, and help spread the word.
