Saturday was the Mason County Wildland field day training. Crews worked on their skills building fire line, working in a chain (follow the leader line building), digging up deep rooted stumps, and laying hose lines. It was a great day of learning and crews did very well.

This weekend, personnel from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, Harstine Island Fire Adapted Communities, and Central Mason Fire & EMS partnered to deliver Harstine Island’s annual community chipper day. This event allows Harstine Island residents to clear vegetation from around their homes to create defensible space from wildfires, and have the vegetation chipped at no cost.

This event is a reminder that fire season is upon us in Western WA and homeowners should take steps to make their homes and properties more defensible against wildfire.

You can find more information about defensible space at https://dnr.wa.gov/wildfire-resources/community-wildfire-resilience-and-preparedness/defensible-space-prepare-your-home

The Board of Commissioners for Mason County Fire District #5 / Central Mason Fire & EMS has approved a resolution to place a fire levy renewal on the August 4, 2026, Primary Election ballot. This is not a new tax, it will restore the current fire levy approved in 2022.

If approved, it would reset the fire levy rate to $1.48 per $1,000 of assessed property value and authorize setting the limit factor at 104% for each of the following three years. The $0.29 increase over the current levy rate of $1.19 would be used to maintain current service levels. This will help with operational costs due to increasing inflation costs for fuel, fire equipment, etc.

With an increase of $0.29 per $1,000 of assessed value, a home assessed at $350,000, would only pay an additional $8.46 per month or $101.50 per year.

If you have questions, please reach out to Fire Chief Brandon Searles at (360) 462-3019 or by email at [email protected]
