Originally established by presidential proclamation President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th and a week of observances recognizing officers who given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage.

While the formal ceremonies take place in Washington, D.C., departments and communities across the country hold their own events to pay tribute. We choose to remember those who have fallen in the line of duty through placing a flag for each life lost in the past year. A list of the fallen Officers is placed in the book that resides on a stand next to the sidewalk for all to view and remember their names.

National Police week is both a time of solemn remembrance and a celebration of the men and women who serve with integrity and bravery every day. It reminds us that behind every badge is a story of service, sacrifice and family.

Meet Remmi!!
Remmi is our 7 year old Dutch Shepard. She is trained for single purpose in tracking, evidence, and narcotics. Remmi has been with the police department since December of 2020. Remmi has won trophies in narcotics and is one of the only K9s in South West Iowa to still be certified in ma*****na.

Remmi's handler is Charles Edwards. They have been certified together since May of 2025. When I asked Charles what he thought Remmi was best at he told me that it kind of depends on the day. Some days she is really good at narcotics but other days she is really good at tracking. At the end of the day she succeeds in whatever task she is needed to perform. When it comes to getting drugs off the streets of the City of Shenandoah. Remmi is ready to go at any moment, day or night!

If you would like to make a donation to our K9 Funds please bring them to the Shenandoah Police Department. Or sign up for our upcoming golf tournament!

🎆 Help Light Up Shenandoah!

Did you know Shenandoah's Independence Day fireworks are funded 100% by private donations?

Each year, it takes $7,000–$8,000 to bring this tradition to life—and they need your help to reach this year’s goal.

This show is truly a community effort. Shenandoah Police Department and City of Shenandoah employees volunteer their time to set up and safely launch the fireworks so everyone can enjoy a great night together. ❤️

If you love watching the sky light up on the 4th, please consider making a donation—every dollar truly makes a difference.

💥 Donations are tax-deductible
💥 All amounts are appreciated

Checks can be made payable to Shenandoah Police Department and dropped off at:

• Shenandoah Police Station
• First Heritage Bank
• City Hall
• Shenandoah Chamber & Industry Association

Let’s come together to keep this tradition going for our community! ✨
