In Memory of a Remarkable Life: Irvin W. Judd, Jr (June 24, 1927-August 26, 2026)

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of a remarkable 99-year-old World War II veteran and cherished friend and patron of our museum.

His life was one of courage, service, and dedication. We are deeply grateful for the sacrifices he made for our country and for the support he continued to give to preserving and sharing our local history.

It was an honor to know him and to have him as a patron of our museum. His love of history and his own place in it were a meaningful reminder of why preserving the stories of those who came before us matters so much.

At 99 years old, he leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond his years—a legacy of service, strength, and a commitment to remembering the past.

We are grateful for his life, his service, and his friendship. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Another great photo came into the Town of Shenandoah Museum. Thanks Gary and Sharon Strickler for this awesome photo! To the north you can make out the Shenandoah yard shops. The equipment included an eleven-stall roundhouse, with inspection pits in each stall, and five stalls were equipped with heavy-duty jacks for removing and applying locomotive wheels; a 115-foot turntable for turning the large modern 2-8-8-2 compound articulated class Y-6 locomotives, weighing nearly a million pounds; a completely equipped machine shop; overhead crane for handling heavy materials; blacksmith shop; welding facilities; and a storehouse which carried thousands of items of material and supplies in stock for prompt use.

The car department of the railway company at Shenandoah had a repair track accommodating a total of nearly 40 freight cars properly spaced for repairing. The Shenandoah terminal had yard facilities for the accommodation of approximately 700 freight cars at one time, and more than 2000 cars had been handled through the yard during one twenty-four-hour period; a normal day was handling sixteen freight and passenger trains through the yard. Being the midpoint between Hagerstown and Roanoke, the train wreck crew was located in Shenandoah to get to points between those locations quickly.

The back of this photo was dated March 7, 1939.
