Friends of the Shenandoah Public Library
Activities from July 2019 through June 2020

The Friends' Strategic Plan Goals direct our activities throughout the year:

Goal 1 – Support and Assist the Library Staff
Goal 2 – Develop, Initiate, and Sustain a Public Outreach and Information Program
Goal 3 – Support and Expand Library Programs for All Ages
Goal 4 – Manage Used Book Sale

The annual used Book Sale was held with 37 volunteers helping set-up, conduct the sale, and tear down. A record profit of $1500.04 was made.
The food pantry received free children's and adult books. Thank you to the volunteers and community for their support.

A permanent used book sale (free will donation) was maintained at the Shenandoah Medical gift shop. The proceeds were donated to the Essex Library.

A Cemetery Walk was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in conjunction with the Greater Shenandoah Historical Society. The Friends assisted with publicity and refreshments.

The Friends shared the cost with the Clarinda Public Library for a subscription to "Book Pages", a book review magazine which is free to library patrons.

Volunteers continue to assist with children's and teen activities including the early-out movie and "Kids Can Make" program.

A page and a page on the SPL's website are maintained.

The first Craft Supply Swap and the annual Magazine Giveaway were supported by volunteers.

A creative display is set up periodically in the newspaper reading room by the Friends In-House Library Chair, Duane Stuck.

Due to the Covid-19 virus, several regular and special activities and programs were canceled beginning in March 2020.

Per the decision of the library board, we are ceasing curbside delivery this afternoon with the confirmation of the first case of COVID-19 in Page County. We are so glad we were able to serve as best we could during this crisis. This page will continue to post ideas and links for your enrichment in these difficult circumstances. The Shenandoah Public Library will close tomorrow, 3/17 at 2pm until 4/13. Due dates for existing loans will be extended. Our Curbside To-Go service will begin. To participate, simply reserve your items online or call ahead. After you are notified that your items are ready to pick up, come to the library's Elm Street entrance and call us when you arrive. A staff member will bring your items out to you. We also have drop boxes for material returns in the alley. The Friends' Strategic Plan Goals direct our activities throughout the year:

Goal 1 – Support and Assist the Library Staff
Goal 2 – Develop, Initiate, and Sustain a Public Outreach and Information Program.
Goal 3 – Support and Expand Library Programs for All Ages.
Goal 4 – Manage Used Book Sales.

Membership and volunteers number approximately 200

Balance of funds: June 2018 – $2,753.52; May 2019 – $2,556.60

Volunteers – Membership Chair coordinated the Library staff requests for volunteers throughout the year.

Publicity – The Community Outreach and Social Media Chairs administered and developed evites, newspaper ads and articles, community calendar entries, radio interviews, Friends webpage, and Friends FaceBook page.

Library Displays were set up monthly in the newspaper room by the Friends In-House Library Chair.

Personal VHS to DVD Conversion was staffed by a Friends volunteer throughout the year and available to anyone for a free-will donation.

The 5th Annual Meeting of the Friends was held in August 2018. The program was presented by Omaha Children's Museum entitled The Amazing Bubble Show.

The Board initiated the year with a revised slate of officers.

A table was manned at the Kids Back 2 School festivities held at Sportsman Park, reaching approximately 300 kids.

Cruisin' Shenandoah Car Show: Obtained donations from local businesses for prizes and provided volunteers for the event.

Publicity – The Community Outreach and Social Media Chairs administered and developed evites, newspaper ads and articles, community calendar entries, radio interviews, Friends webpage, and Friends page.

For the Used Book Sale weeded books were purchased from Library for $89; 227 volunteer hours were provided; net income was $1055 Leftover books were donated to the Shenandoah Food Pantry, Salvation Army, and Omaha Goodwill.

The Cemetery Walk, held in conjunction with the Shenandoah Historical Society, was assisted with publicity and refreshments.

A permanent used book sale (free will donation) was maintained at the Shenandoah Medical gift shop.

A contribution of $264 was made towards Book Pages magazine, available at the library and various community locations and distributed with home-bound deliveries.

Volunteers assisted with Lego Free Play and provided two gift movie tickets for the winner of the Lego contest.

A table was manned at the Health Fair.

National Library Week in April was observed with a display in the SCIA window promoting The Wartime Escape program and art exhibit.

The Friends volunteer database continued to be updated.

A donation of $280 was made to the 2019 Summer Reading Program.
