While the most iconic building on Shepherd University’s campus is probably McMurran Hall with its clock tower, some might say that the second is The Little House, a miniature house constructed in 1929 by Florence Shaw, her student-teachers, and a dedicated group of children from the summer school (grades 4–6) as a demonstration of hands-on, multidisciplinary learning. Shaw documented the steps of creating the Little House from its inception as a class project through the development of plans and the laying of its cornerstone.

This documentation continues beyond construction, capturing the various uses of the Little House by children from the 1930s until Shaw’s retirement in 1961. Preserved in a large scrapbook—given to the library in 1972 along with the Little House guestbook—it records not just how the building was created, but how it was used and remembered over time.
