This concern goes to all waste treatment systems, septic and municipal systems. “
There is considerably less available data on contaminants of emerging concern (CEC’s). Recent studies completed by the Silent Spring Institute on Cape Cod have documented the presence of flame retardants and pharmaceuticals in groundwater and are believed to be associated with septic systems. Flame retardants are common in clothing and can be passed to septic systems via clothes washers. Pharmaceuticals are believed to pass through the human intestinal system. Unfortunately, this data set is sparse and there are currently no known treatment or design mechanisms that can be incorporated into septic systems to treat CEC’s.

Cape Cod with its fast draining soils is often a test ground for septic systems and studies of ground water for drinking.

In January 1992, Ann Aschengrau stood in front of a packed auditorium in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Hundreds of people had gathered to hear her explain why the cancer rates on Cape Cod were so high. According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, breast cancer in Barnstable was 41 percent....

About half of New England’s households are on septic systems -- the highest proportion in the country. For decades most conventional systems have done well removing pollutants and pathogens. But they're not very good at removing nitrogen -- which is in human waste. As NEPR's Jill Kaufman reports, ...

"“DEP staff bravely soldiers on, saying they can do the same with less; but the truth is they can only do less with less,” Bachrach said. “As a result, we are not cleaning contaminated sites that could make way for new development and jobs. We’re not as aggressively monitoring pollution and protecting our rivers and open spaces.”

The reduced staff of compliance officers first emerged as a concern in the late 2000s, when DEP Commissioner Laurie Burt presided over the first round of significant layoffs.

Burt said she began to realize she didn’t have the staff or money to perform tasks such as monitoring storm-water runoff from agricultural areas, which can cause toxic algae blooms in surrounding rivers and lakes, and using helicopters to observe the encroachment of development on wetlands."

Over the past decade, as the state Department of Environmental Protection has experienced a significant cut to its staff and budget, the agency has conducted significantly less enforcement and the dollar value of its penalties for those violating state environmental rules has plummeted.

Cape Cod and her water and septic concerns have been a bellwether for the rest of the country. This is an important read.

In January 1992, Ann Aschengrau stood in front of a packed auditorium in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Hundreds of people had gathered to hear her explain why the cancer rates on Cape Cod were so high. According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, breast cancer in Barnstable was 41 percent…

Another one to watch ... Hingham

"The environmental impact of that many units in this area is also of great concern. The project calls for a 90-bedroom common septic system in an area that previously passed State Title 5 for only 15 bedrooms. This property is surrounded by wetlands and streams- should the septic system fail (as similar systems did at Derby Street shops and at Linden Ponds), the likely result would be the contamination of the Hingham water supply, the state wetlands, and neighboring wells- not to mention unsanitary conditions and smells for the neighboring area and anyone who drives on Ward Street."

A 36-unit town house development on Ward street has been proposed under Chapter 40B. This project presents serious safety risks to the town and its
