Day 2 of and we're talking about all of the scientific advancements that take place in Public Health that continue to keep us safe and healthy. Did you know that in 1900 the Child Mortality rate was 30% and today it is less than 1%? That decrease is due to the introduction of things like antibiotics and vaccines which prevent deadly disease and treat illness in vulnerable populations. Today, public insurance programs like Medicaid, the VA, and the ACA all work towards expanding access to preventative care to continue to make the world a healthier place. As continues, look into how you can take action whether that is expanding access to preventative screenings or advocating for evidence-based policy making.

National Public Health Week takes place every year during the first week of April! Each year, we celebrate how public health has improved our daily lives, safeguarded our families, and strengthened our communities. One core value of public health is coordination, and coordination is the backbone of safe food and disease prevention. Did you know that Massachusetts Department of Public Health launched a program where you can report suspected foodborne illness? Report My Meal directly connects the state public health to the local public health and gives power to the residents to report any suspected foodborne illnesses!

Did you know that colorectal cancer is the deadliest cancer in adults younger than 50 and the second deadliest cancer overall? It is estimated that in 2025 over 150,000 Americans were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and when caught early, colorectal cancer has a 90% survival rate.

Colorectal cancer can be prevented through screenings starting at the age of 45 but talk to your medical provider about your personal risk factors and if you should be screened earlier.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Commissioner, Robbie Goldstein, has rebuked misleading assertions about vaccines and autism. The MDPH rejects the assertion posted on November 19th on the CDC website suggesting that the statement "vaccines do not cause autism" is not evidence-based. Commissioner Goldstein stands firm that such claims are factually incorrect and deliberately misleading and that vaccines are one of the most effective and life-saving interventions in the history of medicine and public health. Vaccines do not cause autism, but they do a lot more.
