An update about Darla. She will need to be a sanctuary doggie, but she will be safe and loved ♥️

Many times, we post stories of dogs who go from rags to riches... walking miracles of dogs who go from dead to happily ever after. But life isn't always happily ever after. Sometimes, there are setbacks. Disappointments. Dreams that don't work out. When that happens, we don't give up on our dogs. We try to give them every possible and reasonable chance to succeed.

Six months ago or so, Darla was found in a ditch in Chautauqua County. Scared and stressed, she growled at every person she saw... except the Town of Sheridan Dog Control . That Officer, who we like and is one of the good ones, sought help from every rescue. We were the ones that answered the call. Darla was a little bit of a mess... fear reactive, clearly beaten and broken by humans before they left her in a ditch. In other words, just our type.

We sent her to a board and train where she made great progress and then to a wonderful foster home. This is where happily ever after hit a wall. There were no great mistakes made by anyone involved. The foster is great. We provided every resource. Darla was loved, cared for, and worked with. The margins of error are small for our dogs.

But they still deserve every chance we can give them... their lives are precious and worthwhile. We can't always make a miracle happen. We can give each animal the best chance we can give them. So now she is here with us at the sanctuary. So far so good. With a neurotic dog such as Darla, our hope is that the clean fresh air, structure, routine and consistency of the sanctuary will give her the peace that she could never find in the outer world.

The reality is though, we don't know how it will work out. But we know she deserves that chance. For her, for any of them...we will take that chance.
