🎉The reward…
Starting a small business from scratch is one of the hardest things anyone can do. But when deciding to create one with a mission of training and exercising First Responders, it adds an extra layer of difficulty, and more importantly, risk. You now have both clients, the agency that hires you, and unknown customers, the public that agency serves.
The ‘risk’ isn’t going out of business for these companies, but ensuring your curriculum and the Team you have handpicked delivers a message that makes the whole community safer. There are no warranties on Public Safety Training; your product either works, or there is a catastrophic loss of life. Those are the only two possibilities.
Last week, two of my Instructors, Dan Casner and Christine Housley, provided a Hazardous Materials Incident Commander (HMIC) course to the First Responders of SPARTANBURG COUNTY in South Carolina. They did such a good job that REST was provided a Letter of Recommendation from the County. And while that is always great to hear, it does not prove the success of the product you provided.
Yesterday, one week after the course ended, Spartanburg County’s First Responders were faced with an extremely dangerous leak of a highly unstable flammable chemical from a rail car. These amazing men and women, responding to an incident that truly placed their lives in danger, took a leap of faith by implementing the ‘new way of doing things’ they had just learned from REST. Here is a partial transcript of a text message we received from one of the Chief Officers in charge of this scene last night:
‘HazMat Team has been out since 1300 with another rail car venting. The HMIC training was implemented with a Safety Officer and HazMat Safety Officer and all other positions filled by those who attended your class. This was number five in the last two years, and it could not have been executed better. Thank you! You have made a significant impact on our operations and our lives. We all get to go home.’
Wow...
Full credit for this success goes to my Instructors and to the First Responders of Spartanburg County for being open-minded and willing to learn. The real winners here? The residents and workers of Spartanburg County who are now safer thanks to the heroes that are ready to protect you 24/7. For any members of the Spartanburg region who may read this, thank your First Responders for literally driving up to something they knew could take their lives!
And as a small business owner, all of the debt, uncertainty, fear and struggle was instantly worth it from that one message. In other words, the reward.
Stay safe and thank your heroes,
