🔥 Fire Danger Remains High in Sheridan County

Sheridan County fire departments have responded to two wildfires today, both caused by sparks from vehicles.

The largest fire, near Parkman along Highway 345, was contained to approximately 3 acres thanks to a quick response from the Tongue River Fire District, Dayton Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office, Padlock Ranch, and several nearby residents.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect today, and critical fire weather conditions are expected again Friday.

Please use extra caution:
🚗 Avoid driving or parking in tall, dry grass
⛓️ Make sure trailer chains are not dragging
🚜 Use caution with equipment that can create sparks
🧯 Keep a working fire extinguisher nearby when operating equipment

With the Labor Day weekend approaching, a few simple precautions can help prevent human-caused fires and keep our local firefighters from responding to fires that could have been avoided.

🔥 HOT, DRY & WINDY FRIDAY — THEN STORMS POSSIBLE

09/03: The US National Weather Service Billings Montana is forecasting critical fire weather conditions Friday in Sheridan County, followed by increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms Sunday and Monday.

⚠️ FRIDAY: A Fire Weather Watch is in effect Friday afternoon through Friday evening. Temperatures could climb into the upper 90s, humidity may fall near 10%, and southwest winds could gust up to 35 mph.

🔥 Low humidity + heat + gusty winds = fires can start easily and spread quickly.

🚒 Help our firefighters enjoy their Labor Day weekend too — preferably with burgers, family, and a little downtime… NOT responding to a preventable fire. Avoid activities that could create sparks, and use extra caution with anything that could start a fire.

☀️ SATURDAY: Warm and mostly dry.

⛈️ SUNDAY & LABOR DAY MONDAY: Increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms, with cooler conditions moving in.

The US National Weather Service Billings Montana has issued a Red Flag Warning...which is in effect from noon to 9 PM MDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS: Low humidities and strong gusty winds will create erratic fire behavior.

* AFFECTED AREA:
In North Central WY Fire Zone...284.
In South Central MT Fire Zone...129.

* COUNTIES AFFECTED:
In North Central WY...Big Horn...Johnson...Sheridan...Washakie.
In South Central MT...Big Horn...Carbon...Yellowstone.

* WIND: South 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* HUMIDITY: As low as 12 percent.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS: The strongest winds, and area of greatest concern, in MTZ129 are forecast in the western portion of the
zone.

..AN AREA OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT SHERIDAN COUNTY UNTIL 215 PM MDT... per US National Weather Service Billings Montana

At 109 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking an area of strong thunderstorms in Sheridan County, moving northeast at 30 mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph and pea size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible.

Locations impacted include... Sheridan, Ranchester, Dayton, Big Horn, Clearmont, Banner, Leiter, Arvada and Parkman.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information
and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.

At this time, severe thunderstorms are not expected in Sheridan County. However, storms may still produce brief gusty winds, lightning, and localized rainfall.

While the greatest severe weather threat is expected to remain north of us, storms in our area could still bring 𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹.
