Our firefighters trained on wildland skills today!
Skills included basic chain saw operations and maintenance, building fire lines, and deploying progressive hose lays with overview on LCES (Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones).
After the field training everyone learned and practiced hand tool maintenance and restored all the engines to service once again.

Working with Sheridan Oregon Volunteer Firefighters Association we were able to receive grant awards from Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and First Federal Savings & Loan we were able to purchase 10 new pagers for our volunteers.
This in conjunction with our emergency alerting phone app allows our volunteers to receive timely notifications and dispatch information on emergency and public service calls.

Thank you for the assistance in this valuable purchase! Now each and every one of our volunteers has a functioning pager!

We are sorry for the loss of life experienced today. Please stay safe and do not drive through water, or past road closure signs.

Per NOAA:
"It only takes 6 inches of moving water to knock you off your feet" and "12 inches of water can float a car or small SUV, 18 inches of water can carry away large vehicles."

On December 19, 2025, at about 7:40 am Yamhill Communications (YCOM) received a 911 call regarding a vehicle which had driven past road closure signage into high water covering the roadway on SW Dejong Road between Ballston Road and Christensen Road. The caller observed the vehicle get swept off the roadway by the water with the current carrying the vehicle east from the road into a large, flooded area on the south side of the South Yamhill River. A witness observed a single occupant getting out of the vehicle into the water.

Deputies from the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office and Polk County Sheriff's Office Oregon responded with mutual aid support from Dallas Oregon Police Department and Grand Ronde Tribal Police Department. Sheridan Rural Fire Protection District responded and requested assistance from Salem Fire Department with a water rescue team.

Using a drone deployed by Dallas Police Department to search the area, a body was located in the water. Salem Fire Department water rescue team and a Yamhill County resident with extensive water training and experience deployed with an inflatable boat and were able to recover the victim. The victim is identified as a 52-year-old man from Amity, OR.

Many areas in Yamhill County continue to be affected by high water and flooding. We are asking individuals to never drive into high water, and to obey all signage and traffic control devices related to flood affected areas.
