A‑Shift has already ran 10 calls this tour, including a couple of really tough ones, and they still have 12 hours to go in their 48 hour shift. Taking time to regroup matters, and today all the stations got to share a meal together at Joey’s.
Big shoutout to Joey’s Sherrills Ford for taking care of the crew today!
Thank you!
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the fatality calls.

As we continue through this dry season, a state & county wide burn ban has been placed in effect as of today March 28th, at 6:00pm.

In Catawba County specifically, ALL outside burning will be prohibited. This means any outside fire including recreational, bon fires & the use of outdoor fireplaces is strictly prohibited.

This restriction does not include cooking-related fires (gas, pellet, or charcoal grills & smokers). If you must, please use extreme caution and never leave the appliance unattended.

The burn ban will remain in place until further notice.

Citizens seeking further details are encouraged to visit http://ncforestservice.gov or contact your Local Fire department.

As always, staff will remain ready 24/7. Stay safe!

We have partnered with Bunnies for Babies to collect small stuffed bunnies for the NICU babies to be delivered to as many hospitals as possible in our area. Drop off at SFTFR Station 1 located on Slanting Bridge Rd. Please be sure to leave the tags on as the hospitals won't accept them without tags. The Dollar General or Dollar Tree are a few of the places that have inexpensive bunnies. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
Catawba Insurance Agency LLC is also a drop off site.

Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet.

Be kind
We recently had a crew go out to the pickle ball courts at Mountain Creek Park and was questioned. Sometimes we forget that these men and women live at our fire stations for 48 hour tours. This is their home for those 48 hours, they need to eat, sleep, exercise and take care of their mental health.

One of our followers, Betty Thompson from Lady Lake, asked: “I see Engine 52 parked near the pickleball courts while the crew is playing together. Is this something you do often?”

Betty, that’s a great question! The short answer—yes, you’ll see Lake County Firefighters staying active, and sometimes that means hitting the pickleball courts. But there’s a lot more to it than just a game.

We’re not just firefighters when the alarm sounds, we’re the Face of Lake County every day. No other county employees interact with the public as much as we do. You see us at the grocery store, in your neighborhoods, and yes, even at the pickleball courts. Staying in top physical shape isn’t just part of the job, it’s what allows us to be ready when you need us most.

But firefighting doesn’t just take a physical toll; it weighs on us mentally too. The stress, the long shifts, and the calls we’ll never forget can lead to PTSD, anxiety, and burnout. That’s why staying active isn’t just about strength and endurance, it’s about protecting our mental health. Pickleball has become a go-to for us because it’s fast, competitive, and forces us to stay in the moment. It clears our heads, builds camaraderie, and helps us reset after the tough calls.

So if you see us playing, don’t be shy, say hello, grab a paddle, and bring your best game. Just remember, we don’t back down from a challenge!
