The Sherwood Fire Department was awarded a $750 stipend from the national nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) on May 9th, 2026. Its purpose being to increase awareness about the dangers of home fires and the life-saving benefits of home fire sprinklers. Annually, a week is dedicated to bring awareness to these life-saving systems called Home Fire Sprinkler Week. This year’s week is May 10-16th.

Sherwood Fire Department will have an open house at Station #1 located at 400 Lantrip Rd, Sherwood, AR on May 9th from the hours of 9am-1pm. Citizens are encouraged to stop by and use a virtual reality headset to experience a room fire with no sprinklers versus a sprinkler protected room. With the NFPA Fire Sprinkler Initiative, HFSC co-sponsors Home Fire Sprinkler Week, an educational program carried out annually in the U.S. and Canada. The week unites the fire service in the effort to increase awareness of home fire dangers to civilians and responders and facts about installing fire sprinklers in new homes.

“Every community needs the facts about home fire sprinklers, including Sherwood.
We are honored to have been selected for this generous stipend,” “Using the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition’s educational materials, we will raise awareness of how quickly a home fire can become deadly and the life-saving impact of installing home fire sprinklers.”
-Sherwood Fire Department
According to HFSC:
● Without sprinklers, today’s home fires become deadly in as little as two minutes.
● These fires put residents and firefighters at risk from toxic smoke, heat and flames.
● With sprinklers, in a home fire the sprinkler closest to the fire will activate when the temperature reaches about 165F.
● The sprinkler will spray water directly on the fire, controlling or putting it out. In most home fires just one sprinkler activates.
The HFSC Stipend Program is funded through a grant from State Farm®.

We would like to take a moment to thank a few for the care they have given us over the last week. Tuesday we laid our brother Captain Estell to rest and the following departments stepped up and volunteered to run our fire stations allowing our entire department to attend his funeral. But we want to thank the following North Little Rock Fire Department, City of Little Rock Fire Department, Jacksonville Fire Department, Maumelle Fire Department and the Conway Fire Department fire trucks and Honor Guard for taking the lead with the procedures for laying Captain Estell to rest. These five departments sent fire trucks and personal to respond to emergency calls. Also we want to thank Sherwood Police Department for sending officers to all the stations to es**rt the fire trucks to the emergency calls. Last but not least MedFlight Little Rock for sending a helicopter to do a fly over at the funeral and Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) sending units as well to the funeral. Please know that all the above took stress off of us to pay respects to our fallen.

As the days start after the funeral we want to thank Arkansas State Police for sending their “Polar” team to assist in the firefighters mental health. Chaplins from all over have paid us visits and continue to check on us.

Together we will get through this and keep Captain Estell’s memory alive.

Smoke Alert:
The Arkansas National Guard will conduct a prescribed burn of approximately 2,000 acres on Camp Robinson in North Little Rock on Monday, Feb. 23, 2026.
The smoke from the burn may be visible from many locations in the surrounding communities.
Light winds are forecasted, so most of the smoke should remain over the post until it rises and dissipates in the upper atmosphere.
The intent of the burn is to reduce the amount of natural fuel on the ground to benefit wildlife and reduce the wildfire risk to the surrounding communities.
Periodic burns are conducted involving small, controllable, areas of Camp Robinson in order to effectively manage natural resources, provide optimum access to training areas and capitalize on good conditions to add a burn buffer zone to prevent accidental fires resulting from ongoing military training operations. Smaller burns also reduce the likelihood of accidental fires from turning into dangerous wildfires during the volatile dry months.
Post firefighters and environmental personnel will monitor the activity and adjacent fire departments are notified as a precaution to ensure public safety for areas neighboring the post.
Many agencies conduct prescribed burns during this time of year. For more information about smoke in your area or to view a list of agencies burning in your area please contact the Arkansas Forestry Commission at 1-800-830-8015 or visit:
https://mip.agri.arkansas.gov/.../Fire.../Scheduled_Burns...
We appreciate the patience and understanding of our neighbors in the communities surrounding the post during these necessary preventative burn periods.

We are saddened to learn the passing of one of our brothers. Please keep our Brothers and Sisters with Maumelle Fire in your prayers as they go through this difficult time.

The Maumelle Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the death of Firefighter Caleb Sackhoff, who passed away while off duty on Thursday, January 22.

Firefighter Sackhoff joined the department in August 2024 and proudly served the community as a member of Engine Company 1 (B-Shift). Firefighter Sackhoff was a graduate of Firefighter Standards Class 2024-E at the Arkansas Fire Training Academy, where he earned the Academic Achievement Award. He was also a licensed Emergency Medical Technician.

"Firefighter Sackhoff was dependable and energetic," said Fire Chief Beau Buford. "This is a heartbreaking loss for our department and our community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and with our members as they grieve the loss of one of their own."

Complete funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as they are available.
