Preparations for the Shiloh College began in 1836. In 1839, area residents purchased 80 for the school and the State of Illinois legislature officially incorporated the college. By 1896 the college was having financial difficulties and the building then was leased to the Shiloh Hill School District and served us a public school until 1954 and then was consolidated with Trico School District.

The Shiloh College was added to the National Register of Historical Places on November 15, 2005. The
property is located on what once was the home of the Shiloh Academy. It was where General John A.
Logan and his brother attended school. At that time, the only structure was a log building. The current
structure of Greek Revival architectural style was built around 1881.
According to family members of Norman Rickenberg, the railroad bought property on the east side of his
farm and from other others to put in a railway. Shiloh College was built as the first college in Illinois.
However, they (the railroad) changed their route to go through what is now Carbondale. This is where
we now see the Southern Illinois University.
It is important to preserve these wonderful buildings when possible.
